500 yard shooting

500 yard shooting

Shooting Targets up near Lake Cavanaugh in Skagit County. The winds were anywhere from 5 mph to 12 mph that day.  We both had 300 win mags.  My father in Law was shooting a GA Precision custom in a KRG whiskey 3 Chassis.  I have been shooting a Remington 700 Long Range .300 Win mag.  In this video, I was shooting the GAP rifle, because it is a lot easier to shoot and my Remington 700 was starting to beat me up.  It really needs a muzzle brake, which I will be getting from Benchmark when I can.

I made up another load for my Remington 700 Long Range, 208 gr. A-Max, 76 gr. H1000, Loaded to max length at 3.600.  That is my magazine length right there, and I'm still about .040 off the lands.  I used a magneto speed to Chrony it, and it averaged 2907 fps.  with a spread of about 20 fps throughout.  When I did my part, it grouped at around 3/4".  But as I have said before, this gun kicks so hard that every little mistake that I make is magnified greatly.  It needs a brake, and it will be awesome.

Here is a picture of the gun I was shooting.  I am getting errors trying to view the media gallery, so here is an attachment photo.

Nice!

I would have pulled the trigger on a Remington 700 long Range in 7mm Rem Mag if I could have found one.
I stopped in to Sportsman's in Wenatchee over the weekend but all they had was the 300 win.
For the reasons you stated I passed. I know the 300 is to much recoil for me. And I do not want to mess with a brake on a hunting gun.

I also stopped in a Cabelas on the way home in Marysville same story no 7mm.

I did spend some time looking at scopes for the future rifle.
What scope are you running.

Thanks

Right now, I have a bushnell 6-24 tactical on it.  I will be switching to a Bushnell 3.5-21 dmr when I can though.

Have you used RL25 to push the 208 amax out of your LR 700 300 winmag?

No, I haven't use RL 25.  I have pretty much always stuck with hogdons Extreme powder series because I am a hunting and I want my powder to be temperature insensitive.

Great shooting! Fun watching that.

Interesting...I did get a 700 LR 7mm Mag from Cabelas...but it took a special order to get it.  The guy at the gun counter (Tualatin,OR) said there were only 4 in the entire US..all at the Sidney,NB location...so he got me one.  Haven't shot it yet but does anyone have an idea of a load for it?

How do you like that amax 208 for a hunting bullet?

I haven't hunted with the 208 amax, I hunt with a 200 grain Nosler AB.  It works well on game.  But I am thinking about using the 208 for deer hunting this year.  The Amax has a thinner jacket and would expand more than the AB would at long distances.  I knocked down a deer last year at 680 yards with the 200 AB and that was pretty close to the limits of the bullet.  I think it would have enough energy for another 100 yards or so until it might start having some expansion issues.

remington 700 LR recoil

This is that recoil I was talking about.  Yes, I know my hand comes off the gun.  I am trying not to muscle the gun and that is how I shoot.  I shoot a lot, and I am just flat out getting beat up with this gun.  Every single mistake I make with this gun is magnified like crazy.  Brake time.
