Multi Season Tag

Hi I'm curious about the Multi Season Permit Application....

If I put in for it and am drawn I can hunt for Elk during all seasons with all weapons?

It would be my first time ever putting in for this permit. Please let me know as tomorrow is the due date to put in for it.

First you have to buy the application and then you have to go in through special permits and submit your application (same as the way you do for special permits for special hunts for deer or elk or whatever).  If drawn, you can choose to buy the multi season permit which costs like $136 or something for deer and $180 or something for elk.  You are under no obligation to purchase if you get drawn, but it gives you the privilege to purchase.  You probably won't draw elk in your first year and chances of drawing deer are exceptionally high, you just have to decide if its worth paying $136 more to shoot the same 1 deer.

Benefits:
You can hunt all regular seasons with the appropriate weapon.  If drawn for elk you can hunt both sides of the state with the weapon legal for general seasons in any given area under the general season rules for that area.  The real perk is you can apply for special permits in all weapon categories and for east side or west side if drawn for elk.

My thoughts would be, if you have lots of time to commit to elk, put your name in the hat and your success odds increase significantly due to the increased season length and freedom to hunt either side of the state.  For deer, if you're already having success in the season of your choice, no particular need to apply unless you want time to be more picky on the size of your deer.  Its a lot of money to drop on a deer though.

Not a problem.  I don't think its worth getting a point for deer since its so easy to draw, but you might consider putting in for points only option for elk if you think you might want to draw in the future.  I do think that is worth the $6 or $7 application fee and sets you up well for future years.

With the reduced number of quality tags one has to consider hunting West verse East.  I supposed of one drew they would put in for all East side tags and than if you did not draw your area you hunt the crappy West side.

Not a problem.  I don't think its worth getting a point for deer since its so easy to draw, but you might consider putting in for points only option for elk if you think you might want to draw in the future.  I do think that is worth the $6 or $7 application fee and sets you up well for future years.   

I put in for points on Elk.  I figure I will build the points, cash, and time off to really have a solid year of chasing Elk in the near future.

I applied for both elk and deer for the multi season permit. I like to have the flexibility on the seasons. I have two small children who are not ready to go deer or elk hunting yet. I had the multi season for deer last year and liked it other than the money. I hunted a lot more because I could space it out. That way I wouldn't have as many conflicts with family stuff. The kids are going turkey hunting with me this spring and I am super excited.

I agree. But I wouldn't worry too much. A lot of folks don't know how to hunt elk over here.

It's a lot different.  I doubt many that have an east side camp established, pull camp to change areas for one year?

It would be hard for me to switch sides when I have elk located and a camp established.  But a change of areas would be nice. Out east I would rais my expectations.

I agree. But I wouldn't worry too much. A lot of folks don't know how to hunt elk over here.

I would love to learn how if anyone would be willing teach me    I'm sick of true spike only

Yeah, I don't think this conveys it even enough to those who have never hunted wet side modern rifle hunts.  It is SO SO freakin wet.  To h*ll with hiking boots and goretex.  Most of the people I know hunt with xtra tuffs.  I remember watching people in camp put on legit like Grundens rain gear.  I even saw some duct tape their rain gear to their boots.  We put electrical tape over our barrels to keep the mud and rain out.  One time I saw spawning salmon swim across the road.  Wet... is an understatement.

The worst part, is that usually some key part of your equipment wouldn't be dry by morning, so you'd have to put on wet clothes, however it didn't matter much because you just walked right back out into a rainstorm again.  It probably made assimilation into the weather more bearable at first light.

Talk sitting and observing for a while?  Your butt gets wet.  So you're always trying to decide if the spot you want to sit is worth having a wet butt for the rest of the day.

Let me just rant about sword ferns briefly.  I'm fairly certain that each of those darn things holds about a GALLON of water.  When you inevitably touch them... its game over.  They are everywhere.

Positives, but so few:

You can track a herd of 8+ elk for days when the ground is soft and muddy

You're rarely too hot, unless you're sweating inside your rain gear

You might get a new pair of boots if you can prove that they leak during the first week of use, which they all do unless they're rubber.
