Chiwawa is closed. The road got washed out in several places and after talking with several Rangers and getting several different stories about when or if it will reopen I have gotten frustrated.
One person I talked with started saying that there is a massive root rot issue throughout the entire area and they just aren't sure if they have the resources to get it open at all.
You had better start making some phone calls and put some pressure on them.

Chiwawa is closed?  Maybe just a certain main road leading into a big part of the road system, but there are other roads that aren't closed to my knowledge.  I also agree, get on the horn with them and start putting on the pressure.  The whole upper Entiat valley these days is falling apart access wise.  Sickening >:(

The gate is shut on Chiwawa River Road right where it changes from paved to gravel.
I just got back from a 4 night campout that was supposed to take place up there. I called the Ranger Station and talked with some Rangers I met at Coles Corner while fueling up and talked with the people that service the camp sites.
I'm just the messenger here relating what I just experienced.
I plan on calling them weekly to get updates and make sure they know there is interest in the area getting opened up.
The root rot thing worries me considerably, because that can be used as an excuse to not let the public in for quite a while.

I just rode the entire Lower Chiwawa Trail and uppr Chikamin Creek trail from Goose Creek campground on Sunday All riding trails were open. All the deer I saw were down by the campground and the forest road north of there. I didn't hear of any closures but I was riding the dirtbike trails. That place is thick. Should be a challenging hunt.

The dirt road to trinity is closed. My cousin was wheeling up there 6 weeks or so and fell through the ice. The sink hole was under the ice and snow that he couldn't see... Picture was pretty gnarly.

Not a huge deal if the Chiwawa River Road is closed.  Most of the late season hunting is done on the opposite side of the unit, and you can still get above the Chiwawa River area (Maverick Saddle, etc.) from Eagle Creek/Van Creek/Second Creek, etc.  If they closed the paved Tyee Road, now that would cause some problems.
