I just bought a new side arm for the woods, I purchased a g20sf gen 3. I'm extremly excited about it, however I'm concerned with differentiating opinions on the matter of what diet of ammo it can consume out of the box. I picked up the g20 solely to feel peace of mind while bowhunting. That being said I'm trying to feed it hard cast 200- 220 grain rounds category. I'm not trying to plink with this thing, I don't reload and I don't have the $$$ to be popping a dollar off at a time. Sooo, I'm leaning towards putting a aftermarket barrel to eliminate the corrosion lead would do to the hexagonal barrel. A lot of opinion leans towards this it seems. Then also to deal with the heavy loads putting a new guide rod and spring in it. I'm also taking into consideration if I barely shoot the thing does it really matter? I'm leaning towards the upgrades. Anyone have a g20sf  and done any experimenting?

I believe that is the most complicated Glock 20 purchase I have read of to date.

Buy, shoot, clean, repeat!

I ran hard cast lead out of my G20 to see how the factory barrel would handle them. Just treat it like any other handgun and clean the lead out after each range session. True hard cast lead leaves very little residue if it's sized properly and will clean out with a bore snake and a little bit of Kroil.

It doesn't sound like you'll be shooting it a whole lot so I don't think that it's really worth throwing a ton of money into upgraded parts. :twocents:

Sounds like if your not going to shoot it much, take the money you were going to put into upgrades and just buy ammo.

The guns are made to digest factory loads,I have 1st and 3rdgen,with a heavy spring you may have problems with light loads,i have extra springs and barrel that I use for target practice.

Pretty much like everyone else has said, it'll be fine stock if you aren't shooting much and keep the barrel clean.

You'll need the money you saved on the upgraded parts for a few boxes of that "heavy" ammo $$$$!

I bought a Wolff spring kit and SS guide rod for the same reason, heavy 200 grain XTPs.  With the heavier springs, 22#, IIRC, the lighter loads did short stroke the slide, but was reliable with the 200 XTPs.  I would skip the barrel upgrade, and shoot and clean with the HC, or just go with a good jacketed HP, like the 200 XTP.  Without reloading, you are probably not going to save much with HC.

Some of the jacketed 10mm loads are nothing to sneeze at. DoubleTap's new Nosler load has more energy than some of their cast loads.
