Yep, but I am waiting until end of august-sept like I always do. It is still around 75% snow covered as of last weekend.

Have you done it both ways? I am just wondering if it is better to fight the mosquito swarms at the beginning or end.

I haven't minded the mosquitos. I have more of a problem with dodging people.  I usually start at chinook around 0600 and end at the kracker barrel for ice cream and socialize with the through hikers. If you start on white and end on chinook especially when flowers are out on naches peak loop and dewey lake, you will be having to dodge a crap load of people which I don't like to do.

Running south is easier, IMO.  I would rather run the switchbacks just north of the Bumping crossing downhil, not uphill.

Naches, I'm surprised about the present snow depth.  I was thinking that the low snow year would have the trail more clear by now. What parts of the trail have you been on lately? A friend showed me his photos from Chinook this weekend and there was plenty of snow. Disappointing.

Fall would be a better time to run it, but hunting gets in the way.

I mostly trail run at work. I actually studied what the Eco guys use to put together my elk gear to stay light.  I don't think I could hang on a marathon run though, I think my back would be wrecked. Thanks for the info you gave me years back on the toutle. It was the last great hunt I had with my dad before he quit hunting.

I also agree that running south is easier.  I also agree that is still a bit early but snow will clear faster this year than last.

I will be in Goose Prairie on June 20th and can report back on snow depth.  I am expecting most to be gone on trails by then this year.

With any luck I will NOT be heading up Bear creek Mt in the next couple weeks. .... terrible place don't go there. I know it is to early but I have an itch

You're welcome. Glad you had a great hunt with your Dad. I'm taking my 78 year old Dad out for the opening of archery season.  That will limit my productivity on elk, but increase my overall satisfaction.

Thanks. I'd appreciate the report.  Snotel for Cayuse, White, and Bumping all show no snow for some time now. The Morse Lake snow depth quit reporting snow depth on 5/2 at 42". Must be broken.  I believe Naches about the snow depth at Chinook, however.

I ran that part of the PCT last year at the end of July on a real hot day....bad idea.  Thinking about that run again or a run in the Wenaha.  Can't find any maps with accurate mileage in the Wenaha, though.  Both require me to choose the run over other activities and that is holding me up a bit.

I just finished a marathon with a 40# pack at Echo Valley near Chelan.  I don't know if I would call it a run, but I did get it done before they closed the course.

Races are great places to train because once I register I end up going and finishing and there are people there to hand out water and munchies.  Half marathon would be a better distance looking back.

Love trail running, just hate having to travel somewhere for it! Chinook to White sounds look a fun challenge.
