Hunt day pack/frame
« on: April 08, 2015, 03:18:09 PM »
I've been looking at putting a new pack together. My recent idea is to put together one of my own packs using an Eberlestock frame pack. Utalize the molle attachments for adding water bladder and pouches for gear.

My idea for this is to be used when hunting a few miles + from the truck. With this pack you can get a good amount of meat out on it and back to the truck. At that point you can get your full frame to get the rest out. That's hopefully at least one less trip you've got to make. I just hate the walk back empty handed.

I've tried on the pack and fits and feels real nice.

Let me know what you guys do/use and what ya think.

I hunt with a frame pack.
I stick my day pack to a small frame I picked up somewhere at sometime I can't remember.  Had it for years.
I think it's an old REI frame, garage sale type stuff.

It works great for the first trip out, then grab the big pack frame for the heavier loads.
Never had an Elk on it but plenty of Deer.

The exo mountain pack looks nice. But more pack than what I'm looking for I think.

I want something smaller/compact. But I don't need any more room for a bunch of stuff other than water, food, rain gear storage, knives. Most of the packs I see are more geared towards backcountry overnight stuff that hold a ton of gear.

Basically a day pack that can haul meat. Thinking I could achieve that with the eberlestock with a few molle pouches catered to the exact gear I carry.

Check out the Kuiu Ultra 3000 - its a very light daypack with a nice waist belt ( for a daypack).  Problem with many daypacks is they are too short to get hipbelt to fit right.

Its most likely lighter than your current setup.

Plus - it will haul whatever you want to carry for meat between the pack and carbon fiber frame.

We hauled a couple moose out 5 miles with them.

Check this guy out with half an elk on it:

Okay those Kuiu ultra packs are awesome. I didn't realize you could haul meat in between the frame and pack on those. And beings I've just loaded up my credit card on a bunch of kuiu clothing, what's another 300$ for a pack too?!

Do you have any experience with the 1600? I like the looks of that one even more so but wonder what the load carrying capabilities are. I'll prob end up giving them a call too.

(The packs are also on backorder, as with the rest of their stuff, but from all I've heard it's worth it)

We've been using the Bull Pacs w/ Ridge Runner Day Pack and the rifle mount for our "want to take a real load out on the first trip" type hunts.  It is amazingly comfortable to hike in all day and allows a guy to take a full load out the first trip.  The Ridge Runner pops right off and once the Bull Pac is loaded with meat, we toss the day pack right up over the top and head for camp.  The rifle mount also makes it nice for "hands free" climbing up out of the hole... least that's where all ours seem to end up  :chuckle:

The 3000 bag is so light and straps down so small I don't know that you would gain much going smaller ?  But the 3000 is a little small for more than an overnight so maybe the 1600 for days and a larger for extended would be the ticket.

I use a mystery ranch nice frame. I personally use the metcalf bag but they make other bags or you could get the load sling and attach any bag you want over that.
For durability and load hauling ability there's not much that equals it.

I've heard of the kuiu frames breaking under heavy loads , but cant say I've witnessed it.

That's what I was thinking. The bags are interchangeably with the frame which is pretty kool.

I started looking at the icon 1850 also and really like the looks of it. Tough decisions!

Thanks for all the replies.

Original Kuiu icon frames break. The icon pro is a big improvement. I'm not sure I've seen any issues with the ultras either.
