Dog food?
« on: April 08, 2015, 03:38:07 PM »
Wife is in search of a better healthier dog food.  Wonder what everyone feeds their bird dogs and if the real spendy high quality dog food is worth the extra money.  I have no problem spending the extra cash if there is a real benefit.

Eggs, raw meat, veggies and rice make a great supplement and are often cheaper than some of the premium dog foods.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I get the kirkland brand dog food from costco for my two labs. They seem to do well on that and I supplement it with fish oil tablets for their coats. I also give them some eggs or left over meat when I can for some extra protein.

Weird,
THis is EXACTLY what I do for my GSP.

And I don't want to hear anyones take on how Costco food killed their friends, aunts, boss', third grade teachers poodle.
Any dog can have an issue with any food.

I do the same. I feed the salmon/sweet potato blend, then give fish oil. Haven't had any problems and my lab has lots of energy with a clean coat.

We had a good hunting chocolate lab with Superchief lineage.  The only dog food she would eat was Old Roy.  When she got too old to hunt, we bought a yellow lab, with papers, who also loved Old Roy.  The vet said it was okay, so we just kept feeding them dogs Old Roy.  The chocolate lived so long her legs wouldn't hold up any more, so we had to say goodbye to her.  She was 17 years old.  The yellow lives to this day, eating Old Roy morning and night.  She loves the stuff.  She is now 12 & starting to feel it now.  She just got her shots updated & the vet says she's looking good.  She hobbles around a bit, but she never misses a trip to the food dish.

Btw... Old Roy is the only thing I will buy at Wally World.  If these dogs wereen't so picky, I wouldn't go there at all. :chuckle: :chuckle:

Dr. Tim's is what the next hound will be fed. Rave reviews from people I respect, delivered to my door for less hastle, no filler= less doody scoopin' and if I have an issue or concern I can get on the horn and talk to Dr. Tim himself.

That's what I feed my lab to. He loves it. I've got no complaints.

We have fed our German Shepherds Old Roy for years. They all have been very healthy. And have lived a good long life. There may be better dog food out there. but our dogs like it and we have had no issues at all!

Have used Pro Plan Performance and Costco's Nature's Domain but moved everyone onto Fromm Gold about a year ago. No weight maintenance problems, no more dry skin/fur issues, and poop in the yard is manageable.

I think their food is advertised as fueling a third Iditarod winner in a row this year. Have heard lots of good things from some bird dog folks in the Midwest about Tim's stuff.

I feed my hounds Loyall Brand food.  In the winter, when I'm working them 4-5 days a week I give them the high performance and in the off season they get the maintenance

I don't do raw eggs anymore... it makes the anal gland act up too much.

Raw meat or bones on occasion, but not enough to be considered a supplement.

We've got our dog on Taste of the Wild.  Spendy but her coat and teeth are in top shape.
