Did A Wolf Do This?
« on: April 20, 2015, 08:09:00 PM »
I ran across these tracks in the snow while turkey hunting in NE Washington (Colville National Forest) last week. That is a standard 2 3/4" shotgun shell for reference. My initial gut reaction was that they are wolf tracks. What do you all think?

Looks to be roughly a 4" track from tip to tip of the pads. I'd say wolf.
There is something just indescribably painful about being stuck behind a prius on the interstate.

:yeah: definitely canine and I would say if there are no human tracks around or you are quite a ways from any sort of civilization then yes wolf-especially if you are in NE washington.

Wolf tracks are 4 1/2 x 5 inches approx. Those are probably melted out coyote tracks.  :dunno:

I thought that too.... I've never seen tiny wolf tracks though. They are really distinctive looking once you've seen them.

It could be a smaller wolf. The tracks don't seem to be melted out much to me but it's hard to tell sometimes.

Were they all generally in a straight line or did they meander? Straight line = wolf or coyote, meandering = dog.

Realistically someone could come through with a 90-100 lbs dog that could lay down a print that size, but more realistically, what are the chances of that actually happening where you were?

I was there to and just up the road was a good size calf moose 3 legs, shoulder bone, 1/4 of the spine skill and hide. I don't know if big game hunter took a pic of that or not. The wolf was there the day early and a coyote was on it that day very fresh tracks. I should of placed a trail cam on the site. It would of been cool to see what it would catch on film.

These are wolf.  Found about a week ago in unit 121 roughly 4 miles from my house.  The knife is 4.5 inches folded
