I can't believe his father let him take that shot. I'm just glad they found both.

Agree. Not an ethical shot. He has plenty of time. The next day....jeans and short sleaves...how cold could it be. Wonder how much, if any, meat was wasted.

 :yeah:

However, it looked like you could see the dad's breath in the doe recovery portion and they said the second was still alive in the morning so probably no meat wasted, luckily.  Stupid, stupid shot, luckily they are in an area that probably has multiple tags.

Good points. Hope they had a good talk about shot choice after that all went down. Make it into a learning experience and hopefully the young man will continue hunting and learn that when not to shoot can be even more important than when to let loose.

Not much stomach for that....... :(.  Lots of clear shootin' area all around those deer with little doubt that the mom would have shortly and eventually placed herself in a position where her yearlings would not have been so blatantly in harms way.  I certainly understand a dad's enthusiasm in regards to his son'/daughters 'first' opportunity, but emotion took over and common sense and a true opportunity to teach ethical hunting practices, to parent and to learn before making a poor decision, were missed by all.

Not so much the shooters fault, but the dad hopefully takes a more 'responsible and guiding roll' in his son's future hunts.  There is no question that these 3 deer were so close together as to be almost touching one another and hidden by the one's in front of each.  So the angle that dad had being right behind his son, is not in question and couldn't be even if he were in another tree opposite his son's stand.

That yearling spent a great deal of time in agony that was easily avoided by a simple fatherly command, "don't shoot".

Two things I noticed when looking at this a second time.

1. Comments for the video have been disabled. That tells me a bunch of people gave their opinions and they were probably in line with our comments.

2. His description of the video: IN HINDSIGHT, I SHOULDN'T HAVE LET HIM SHOOT, BUT WE DID FIND BOTH DEER. BOTH DEER WERE TAKEN TO A CONSERVATION OFFICER AND CHECKED IN. BOTH DEER HAVE BEEN EATEN AND TASTED REALLY GOOD. EVERYONE LEARNED A LESSON, DAN IS HOOKED ON BOWHUNTING AND WE THANK THE LORD FOR HIS BLESSINGS. That tells me his description was one thing, then the comments poured in, he changed it up a bit to say hey...we know, lesson learned, got it.

I'd say overall it appears that the best outcome for what "could have been" was achieved. Good for both of them.

I left the group that posted this on Facebook earlier today as any group that highlights this as something to aspire to or wants to push this out as acceptable isn't a group for me.  First rule is know your target and what's behind it.  Even at poundages I can pull I don't believe I can ethically kill both targets.

If this was a grouse maybe....

Thats why we need to stick together and all remember to be SAFE and RESONSIBLE with our weapons.Politicians use these peoples descisions to try to take away our right to hunt passed down by our forefathers. Hell, its one of the reasons im proud to call myself an American! That was the worst time to ever take a shot. WTF was that father thinking telling him to shoot? But in West Virginia their full of imbreads and you will see bumper stickers that say, "Im a proud father of a nephew!" :chuckle: Stupid people shouldn't be aloud to reproduce! With that being said, please remember to join the NRA.

I disliked a few of his videos - couldn't keep watching them though.
