Sturgeon being harvested in Hell's Canyon
« on: April 23, 2015, 05:28:11 AM »
It appears sturgeon are being targeted for what appears to be less than legal harvest in Hell's Canyon,. Follow the link to view a forum discussion-
  http://meanchicken.net/webmain/forum/viewtopic.php?f=121&t=16914

I don't want to start another big discussion on who's Rights are right, I just want to bring this to the attention of the public and also look for any insight or helpful suggestions. I have not personally seen this happen but do know persons that have and it appears the thread is right on target.

Truly sad when personal rights and money outweigh wildlife conservation. At the end of the day this younger generation of natives is making a very ugly past for their own people to have to look back on. When this generation comes to pass and their kids have to deal with their own tribes past mistakes is when this might get more attention. It will take them bleeding it dry to figure out what they did is wrong on their own. Just think, no sturgeon bc mom and dad wiped em out, and no successful hunting and fishing on their own lands bc of their over catching, trapping, and harvesting of game. The problem however is here now for the rest of us. We cant let these people destroy such an amazing fishery based on rights. The line has to be drawn in order to protect and conserve these ancient fish that are already on the brink of no return from over fishing and harvest. The difference is we know when to say no more and close it down, when they make an excuse to keep their rights (at the careless sacrafice of our shared resources.) Remeber we all pay the price for these individuals lack of caring and compassion to keep, preserve, and save our remaining resources that may one day be gone. At the end of the day, these people choose not go out and get real jobs to support themselves and family (of course reciting tradional values as a way to stay out of western influence). On top that our government already pays them every month just for being native. The native woman in the pic sure doesn't look like she's taking that fish out of necessity (riding in a $20k or more sled sporting nice gear and electronics). I wonder what her great grand kids will be saying when there are no sturgeon. Hey look theres a pic of mom with one if the last breeding sturgeon in Hells Canyon DEAD in her boat. Awesome memory to preserve and contribute to your people and family.

There is a reason we have laws regarding the amount of fish and game we can keep, some people have no self control and at the end of the day are greedy.  Those laws were put in place because of overharvesting in the past and have been for the most part helped in population recovery. Unfortunately these laws do not apply to everyone.  The tribes really need to do a better job policing themselves and step up and take responsibility for their actions.  We have seen the devastating effects of free for all hunting and fishing, why are they dead set on repeating the mistakes of the past?

:yeah: It's happening all over :bash: They get a lot more per pound than salmon and is the real reason we lost the fishery in the first place. It's a shame we loose a fishery only to see the indians profit from it. The only way to save the sturgeon now is to elliminate the market for them.
