2015 Spring Bear Stories
« on: April 19, 2015, 09:30:52 PM »
So as some of you may know, me and SG both were selected for Copalis.
We spent all weekend up there driving literally every road Rayonier had available. Found and marked all the cuts on our map and sat on each one and called/glassed for about as long as we could "bear" to - hah anyways. By about 5pm on our last day "today/sunday" we came to our last clearcut and we kinda knew it was because we traveled wvery othwr road. So we parked in the middle of the road and just kinda sat there and relaxed for awhile. 45 min into our relaxtion period I heard a few crunches in the thicket to the left of us, It definetly grabbed my attention for a second.
At that point I started doing a few calls, nothing for about 20 minuts, which at this point I kinda brush it off to just random sounds of the woods.
I hear another crunch, crunch, snap.
Now I'm for sure on alert. Another 5 mins or so go by and nothing, but my attention is still locked on this little area of trees. Then I see this small two foot tall sapling just completely fold over - next a black ear flicker. I smack the girl on the chest to get her attention "bear bear, get out and grab your gun" She slowly gotbout and snuck around. At this point she still hasn't seen him but my eyes were locked right on. Had him completwly in view from where I was, didn't even want to move. She walked around the back and I'm trying to point her in the direction with half sign language. She raises the gun and right as shes gotbher eyes on him, he lifts his head. Gone... Right back into the trees.
Gotta say, after an entire weekend finding next to no deer, elk, or bear sign with not a single animal sighting. It got intense real fast. So we came close, no cigar  :bash:
One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.

So I drew the Copalis tag also and spent the last 2 days up there. First day drove all of the roads, glassed clear cuts, looked for all of the areas bears like to be but saw nothing. I didnt even seen any sign along the logging roads.  Yesterday I hiked in on some of the closed gates and same thing..no sign of bears.  I have alot of weekdays off so I'll be up there during the week.  Saw alot of elk and brush pickers.    I hunted off of the 8002 gate and the 6000 gate off of Kirkpatrick.  They're logging just a ways up from the 6000 gate during the week so I didnt spend to much time on that end.  Good luck guys, keep me posted!
