How big is too big for a hand gun?
« on: April 27, 2015, 09:23:21 PM »
Keeping in mind, I have a slightly different definition of a handgun. :chuckle: The term I'll go with is specialty pistol or "SP"

After a recent outing to shoot at 1380-2293 yards I realized that I'm pretty bad with a rifle. I'm alright with not hitting the gong at over 2200 yards; if you can't range it with a Leica it doesn't count. ;) The fact that I struggled more with the shots at 1380-1600 with a rifle than I do with an SP is what got me thinking. If I can keep up with the big rifles (7mm RUM, 338 Edge, and my own 375 BME) out to 1587 yards shooting either a 19" barreled 284 Winchester ora 19" barreled 260 Rem "SP", what can I do with a more appropriate caliber in the pistol. The 284 and 260 both go subsonic at around 1350-1400 yards with my loads. That's where they start to struggle. So why not build an SP which can stay super sonic beyond that?

My goal is to come up with a specialty pistol which can move a bullet with a BC of over .800 to 3000 FPS from a 20" barrel. Right now I'm looking to the 408 CheyTac case for this project. I'm thinking either a 338 or 375 improved version will get me pretty close to where I want to be. That should get me right in the same max range as a 338 Lapua improved or a really fast 338 Edge +p

Should be a fun project!

Andrew

Yup!

I've been thinking of trying their 375 bullets. They would be perfect for this project!
