Remington 700 SPS 30-06
« on: April 29, 2015, 06:25:32 PM »
I just bought a Remington 700 SPS for $497.00 from Double Eagle used. I understand these are $650-$700 new. I put a nice Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14x40mm SF scope on it. My questions are did I overpay, and what do you who have or have shot this particular rifle think of it? What kind of accuracy can i expect, and what's a good maxium range i should shoot with this rifle for ethical kill shots? Appreciate your time, thanks! :)

Walmart has ADL's for $377. w/scope, peddle the scope for $30. and you have a Rem 700 for $350.  How much is the SPS worth over a new ADL's is up to you, same barrel and action only the stock and bottom metal are different.

You should expect 1 1/2" or less but who knows, somebody else got rid of it for some reason.   A good maximum range is as far as you can shoot and keep the FIRST shot in a dinner paper plate ( 9" circle) from field positions for deer , elk and bear, the cartridge has more than enough power.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm raining on your parade, I try never to buy a used rifle without trying it first, being able to return it or  getting it at a good enough price that I can afford to work it over.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

I bought one from Cabelas a few years back for about the same price (it came with a cheap Remington scope that I replaced with a Leupold). It is my go to rifle for big game. I love mine. The only problem I have had is that I forgot to use loctite when I mounted the scope, and the recoil shook the scope loose while at the range. So far it has put 4 deer down without a problem. I have noticed that all of the R700s I have owned really liked Hornady ammo. If you can find the right ammo for yours, you should be able to get MOA performance. The weight is great for when I am putting miles on my boots. I like that I can load the detachable mag option. Make sure you check via the Remington website as to whether your trigger is subject to recall. If it is they will pay to ship and fix it. The externally adjustable trigger is nice and crisp with no noticeable creep. It is not quite on par with the accutrigger or some of the aftermarket triggers, but I like it.  Overall, great gun that you will get plenty of years out of.

Thank you for the great info Jarhead! I just got back from the Spokane Rifle Club rifle range, and my 700 SPS 30-06 averaged a 1 1/4" group! I was very impressed considering that i was using cheap Federal Powershok .150 grn ammo. My smallest group was right at 1 inch. This rifle is one of the most accurate rifles I have ever owned, what a tack driver. I can honestly say I can hit a 50 cent piece every time at 100 yards now. I am sooooooo thrilled with my 700. I LOVE REMINGTON!!!!!! 8)
