Best lead cast bullet for reloading 454???
« on: April 29, 2015, 07:59:31 PM »
Going to start reloading for my 454 casull and am looking for a good bullet to buy.  Ultimately want it to be a bear stopper....and may shoot a deer with it one of these days.  Any suggestions on a lead cast bullet / manufacturer that would fit the bill.  Any real reason someone can see to use a copper jacketed bullet over solid lead????  if so let me know.

thanks

jrebel

You going to have a big time leading problem, unless you make real slow loads. I tried some jacketed wad cutters in my 454 as per a Speer loading. It was separating the jacket from the core. If you try lead bullets, make sure you get a Lewis Deleader.

:yeah:

Beartooth bullets are top notch! I just met the owner of Beartooth bullets last Saturday while fishing in Westport. Great products and a great company!

As far as leading, a properly sized gas checked bullet won't cause significant leading problems. Properly sized is the key.

:yeah:.   From my experience, both a very experienced and helpful company and IMHO........ excellent, extremely well designed products.

'WFNHCGC' = wide flat nose, hard cast, gas checked...and boy are they hard.... :yike:.

if you are going there, why not set up and cast your own? its not that $$ to setup and you will never be searching for bullets at store.. cast a bunch at once, lube and stow (I use old coffee cans). you can cast plinker lead loads to hard hunting loads.....the material mix in your melting pot is up to you....
