Does Fluorescent Lighting Singe Fur?
« on: May 20, 2015, 11:52:12 AM »
So I'm building a fur shed and need to know.  I was told by one of the older trappers at our last Rendezvous that fluorescent lighting in a fur shed can singe mink and other fur.  I am a bit skeptical but if it really does I guess I need to light my shed with something else.  What have people experienced out there?

I have no clue to the question, but there are some really good deals now on ready to go LED shop lights.
Or if you have the fluorescent fixtures already you can get LED bulbs that will just go right in and work, no rewiring needed.. :twocents:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

I would have a hard time buying into that. Heat will singe fur. Fluorescent is a cool light. I wouldn't put a fur right alongside any light bulb but I would worry more about incandescent.

I am pretty skeptical about a lot of the things used to blame trappers for singe. The idea that light would singe fur seems far out. Mink and otter don't live in caves. They are exposed to light every day of their lives so why aren't they all singed.
Also how long are you going to have the lights on in the fur shed and how long is the fur going to be fur side out?
I think almost all singed fur was singed when it got in the trap.

I am an electrician and have t8 8' fluorescent fixtures in my shed. Fluorescent lights don't put out nearly as much heat as a tungsten or halogen light. Ive never had any problems.
