Here is a tip.  The main road head into that unit allows you to access some very large, steep canyons. (Look to the left as you drive up)  I never hunted spring bear, but I always found them by sitting at the top of a ridge and listening.  I would listen for rocks being moved, which carry very well, and then move around until I could spot the bear.  They were down there digging up rocks looking for food, and I always found a few while camping, some not more the 500yds below camp!

I saw four on Saturday in the Lick Creek GMU. Three were black and one was cinammon. I'm not sure if they habitate the same areas in the summer and fall.

Find the trail at the upper end of the Canyon for George Creek. It's off the 43 on top by the corrals. Over the years we've taken three bear and have seen a few others. Been a while since I've hit the trail, but it goes about three miles to the Forest Service fence at the Anderson property. Like was said earlier, listen up for rocks being turned. You can hear them as you slowly work your way down the trail.

Every year is different. I've picked them in the Blues in July through Mid August.  Elevation specific obviously.
