Lynden to Pullman

I am an 18 year old that is going to be attending Washington State University next fall. I am used to hunting in Twisp, but i am looking for something closer to Pullman. Any ideas?

Look for public land in Almota area.  Most farmers have experienced drunk college kids doing stupid stuff, so the answer was no most of the time.  Or they are private hunt clubs.  Bird hunting is a lot easier.  Deer are prized by the land owners and there friends for hunting.

There are a few areas for "written permission" only hunting...Other than that, that corner of the state is pretty tough to get onto land if you're not a family member or close friend. If you do some research on here, you can learn a lot about people who have tried hunting the breaks near the rivers and such...Like h2o said, it's tough thanks to your predecessors.

Best advice I can think of is try to hook up with a local farmer's daughter.

Bobcat's advice is pretty fool proof!  Theres lots of feel free to hunt property around colfax and steptoe butte though if you fall short on closing the deal with the farmers daughter.

I never had a problem finding somewhere to hunt.  There's lots of public land and lots of farmers to ask permission from.

Welcome to the Palouse!

Be prepared to knock on a lot of doors!  For many here in the region, modern firearm season is the time for family and friends to return to the Palouse and hunt together.  If you go archery or muzzleloader, there is a lot better chance of a positive response, especially if you indicate you are willing to take a white-tailed doe.  And it very much helps if you are willing to help around the farm or give some meat back as a thank-you.

I had luck knocking on doors and asking for permission.  Most farmers are generous about granting hunting access.  There is also a lot of army corps. land along the Snake that is open to public hunting.  Lots of information on access points online.

GO COUGS.... When ever i drive to see the daughter i always see deer starting at Washtukna to Pullman. Seen some good sized deer. I also have thought of trying to hunt that area. Or even going into Idaho. Good Luck with School and Hunting...

Put on your Coug gear and start knocking on doors. Several of the places we were given access to are now locked up by clubs and/or guides, but at least now you have some advanced technology to aid in figuring out who owns what on the fly. I'd use onxmaps to aid in your search. We spent most of our time on property along the Snake River breaks. Many of the land owners there have tracts that hold good muley and whitetail opportunity, which also means a mix of upland bird opportunity. Oh and fresh salmon fillets are always a good peace offering 

Most/all of the public land options will be a zoo come rifle season, private or public I'd suggest switching to archery or muzzy if you haven't already.

I've never had too much problem finding places to hunt around Pullman/Colfax.  Try wearing a pair of jeans, a WSU shirt, boots and carry a pair of gloves and pliers.  When asking for permission, start off by asking if they have any fences that need mending.  If they say no, just tell them thanks and that you were looking for a place to hunt in return for some work.  Be prepared to spend a full day or two though!

I have a friend with an 800 or so acre beef range just north of there. I'm sure he would be willing to let you hunt there if you would be willing to help out around the ranch now and then. Of course there is a small finders fee involved so you will have to do my share of the helping out around the ranch as well. PM me if you're interested and I'll get you in touch.
