Wyoming Deer Draw for Dummies
« on: May 08, 2015, 03:52:37 PM »
Ok explain this to me like I'm 6 because I'm not a drawing and statistics pro like some of you guys.

http://gf.state.wy.us/web2011/Departments/Hunting/pdfs/DRAW_DEER_PP_NONRES_20140005886.pdf
http://gf.state.wy.us/web2011/Departments/Hunting/pdfs/DRAW_DEER_RD_NONRES_20140005888.pdf

I'm considering a Region C deer tag. Last year on the Preference Point Draw schedule it shows 1,489 tags for that draw and a total of 2,128 applicants. So everybody with at least 1 point was 100% guaranteed a tag and 64% of those with 0 points who put it as their first choice got the tag.
On the Random Draw schedule it shows 496 tags allocated, with  754 first choice applicants and 77 second choice applicants.

So: does this mean there's 0 chance of drawing the tag if I put it as my second choice under the Regular Draw? It seem as though I can put it as my second choice if I shell out the big bucks for the Special Draw and retain my points. http://gf.state.wy.us/web2011/Departments/Hunting/pdfs/DRAW_DEER_PP_NONRESSP_20140005887.pdf

Did I miss anything?

On the regular draw you have no chance as a second choice. In the special draw you can draw it as a second choice and still get a preference point if you select the preference point option. There are some great deer in C. But a lot of the public land is land locked by private.

Oh sure we can argue  :stirthepot:  :chuckle:

Private landowners shouldn't be allowed to block public land :boxin:

BC, I'm right there with ya....but different states play by different rules. THere are some huge tracts of land in the SC part of the state completely landlocked due to a couple farmers "owning and maintaining" the roads...Lots of public land gets locked up

Are regions G and H any good?  Years ago I remember them being decent units, but it's been a while.

Seems as though H is a lot easier to draw. My understanding is that both units get pounded by the locals. I think I'll save my points for a unit specific late hunt.

That makes sense, we hunted the SE corner of Idaho years ago and the poaching was ridiculous. And G and H were across the border from us, so I can imagine the locals across the boarder hunted the same.  Talked to the sheriff in Paris and they said there just isn't enough game wardens to police the area.

G is the best area in WY weather you are talking general region or limited draw.  If you want to avoid all the locals hunt the last 2 weeks of the season.
