Preffered DVD series for training water dog??

So my lil lab will be coming home in 11 days, I have read 10 minute retriever a few times now,  as well as dokkens retriever training. I like both, both are pretty simmiliar.

Im kind of thinking a DVD will help me, as this will be the 1st real hunting dog I will have trained.

What is your preffered DVD or series for training water dogs?

Any of the series by Richard Wolters...he has books and dvds available. I have trained several waterfowl Labs using his waterfowl book

I read some of the Wolters books and they were a great read. Now that I've done a lot more homework I'm choosing to start my pup out with the bill hillman retriever puppy dvd and then likely the Mike Lardy materials as well as joining the Whistling Wings HRC and whatever other club is near me. Just my approach. The Mike lardy bound articles are a really good read as well as being really affordable. With that said I also have gathered a collection of other dvds over the past 2 years in anticipation of getting a pup. Chris Akin's Duck Dog Basics 1 &2 as well as rick stoski's Fowl Dogs and Jackie Mertens puppy DVD. I read that Even Grahams program is pretty good as well but haven't watched it. Freddy King has a series of youtube videos and so does a guy called the Canadian wingshooter. Both are great for getting a hang of a lot of terminology as well as seeing some techniques for free. I'm a complete novice so just sharing some of my reasearch. Everyone will tell you what they did and how it worked great and if you do what they did it will work. Might be true but from what I gather it's just everyone's 2 cents so count your pennies. I went with the piggies bank that was fullest. Also means there are more ppl out there who are doing or did the same program. My 2 cents.

you have to be careful. Especially, when you are beginning and new. There are contradictory methods from program to program and a modern program is a series of building blocks which you must gain competency to move on to the next step. Skip steps because you run into roadblocks and you'll have what we call, "holes in your dog".

Reading and trying to apply stuff from a bunch of programs NEVER works. You should pick one.(my choice is Lardy or Hillman) and stick to it. Don't try to add Evan Graham stuff, don't try a Wolters drill that looks fun etc etc.

The most success will come from sticking to one. Maybe once you're dog has reached an advanced level you might pick a marking drill or similar but, beyond that....no.

I am a rookie trainer and really would like the lardy stuff. However I went with the fowl dawgs series and really like it. Easy to follow for me at least

I may just stick to 10 minute retriever, been around it in the past so im familiar with it. I did find another book, can't remember the title or author off the top of my head but it was written specifically towards pointing labs, im going to order that one and see what its all about to.

I watched a bunch of Hillman stuff on youtube, if I go DVD route I think it'll be him.

I am currently using Hillmann with my 5 month old pup and I love it. He has so much drive it's crazy but will sit like a statue until given the fetch command or his name.

When working with the pro on the weekend he is a marking machine. Sits still and watches the bird hit the ground. Out of the 3 pups in his age group he is by far the more advanced dog as far as skill set. He is nailing marks out to about 75-100 yards in medium cover. He never has to put on a big hunt because he is steady on the line and marks the bird.

Overall I am very happy. The pro that I work with prefers Lardy, however.

I may be looking to sell the DVD when I am ready to move on to the Fetch and Fundamentals DVD's if you are interested in a reduced price.

I probably have two weeks left... I started training my pup at 11 weeks on Hillmann. That would give you a week or two to review the DVD. Assuming you are getting your pup at 7 or 8 weeks.
