Quilomene 329
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:06:20 PM »
Has anyone hunted 329 in the past? What can you tell me about the area? Numbers looked good in the past but recently, possibly due to all the fire activity, it seems the numbers have dropped quite a bit. Does the area hold any elk? Areas that you can't hunt? Thanks for any info you feel like sharing :hello:

Did you happen the read the bull elk requirements in GMU 329......... :yike:.

It is strictly a 'true spike only' unit and has been now for years and there is no end in sight.  You can read the description in the regs about what a 'true spike' is determined to be.  If doing the math, out of a herd of, let's say, 100 elk, how many true spikes will be available to harvest....?

Some harvest years are better than others as with any elk area, but what is always true, there's a ton of hunters in that unit each year as it is very close to Ellensburg and Yakima isn't far away.

The 'true spike' regulation is very closely monitored and enforced, so knowing your target was never more important.

Good luck.....wherever.

Climb a windmill, you get a better vantage point.

. Ha!  Try close to Seattle so there are lots of hunters.  VAST majority of guys in that unit have lifted diesels from dealerships in king county :chuckle:

Just jump into one of those canyons and you will see why most cruise the roads.

I hunted that unit for about 16 seasons modern, and have done good over the years. Lots of state land, but it's mixed with a lot of private land.  Knowing the land ownership is key to hunting that area. If you go to scout it's just to learn the area. The elk move like the ellensburg wind on opening day. So its completely hit and miss finding animals. Last year I took my son on a two day hunt, saw lots of elk no true spike. Hundreds of road hunters with cow tags in there pockets. It can be like the wild west up by the reserve,so I hunt low in the sage.

Good luck

I used to hunt the sage around Whiskey Dick when I was younger. Dry. Windy. But lots of fun just the same. Bring water...
