Halibut, whats the skinny?
« on: May 11, 2015, 08:04:44 PM »
Due to previos engagement, I was unable to hit the opener for Hali, had to walk my daughter down the isle  :yike:

Any one  catch out halibut  :dunno:

Heard and seen a few pic from Hein Bank, but that is about it...... Was it that bad this year in sound for the opener  :dunno:  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

Come on people, show me {or tell me} what I missed out on and what I got to look forward to this weekend  :fishin: :fishin:

I went out sat in the San Juan's and it was slow. Fished all day, had one bite. I didn't see anyone boat a fish and I didnt see any at the boat ramp. The creel report looks better than what I saw .29 Hali's per boat at cornet, but maybe some guys had honey holes that produced.

Creel reports showing Port A doing well.

I think I am going to hit Neah bay next year.

The skinny on W.A. Halibut..

Head out to the S.E. corner of the "C" go down 450' catch halibut. Head east 15 - 20 miles find structure. Limit on lings. Head east again tell your fish finder turns black. Your either on rocks or 10.000 bass. Limit on bass.
Go fillet fish. Done.

Not like trying to match a hatch. All three of the above will eat anything!

There were lots of boats out last weekend.  Nice weather and the opener.  Not sure how it totaled out, though.

Headed to Lapush tonight; never been on an ocean before.  Heard it's questionable up there as for the weather right now.  Guess I'll be blowin chunks tomorrow.

Lapush Thursday

Variable winds less than 5 kt becoming WNW 5 to 8 kt in the afternoon. A chance of showers after 11am. W swell 6 to 7 ft at 11 seconds. Wind waves 1 ft or less.

Should be fine fishing!

My son in law and a friend are fishing out of Neah Bay.  Got a call this morning about 8:30 a.m. and they had already limited on halibut.

I fished Admiralty Bay on the opener. I caught no fish, didn't see or hear of anyone catching any. I'm sure some were caught, but I didn't see any.

On opener the checker count at Keystone 88 boats = 16 butts.
We didn't get diddly - hitched a ride with a friend from work. Friend of his fishing close by pulled in a 70lb butt.

Heard of a few others caught and one 100lb.

Hein Bank was the place to be.
Had a great time fishing -a bad day fishing is better than any day at work.

My buddies went to "Garbage Dump" near La Push and limited the boat in 30 mins all the butts were around 25 to 35. Great fishing they said just very rough seas.

NOAA forecast was way off for the morning anyway... took about 2 hours to get out to the grounds. Still got our limits both butts and lings had to fish a little harder than thursday but the size was better, averaged probably 25-30 on the butts had a nice 25-30# ling in the boat and a couple other pushing 20. Fun trip out there definitely filled the freezers up.

The forecast for Lapush was pretty close to what I saw, forecasted for 10-20 and calming in the afternoon was just what we saw saturday morning. Made for a slow ride out and a quick ride in.

The southwest corner was the biggest CF I think I've ever seen. Probably 200 boats which isn't uncommon but too many frickin idiots. Hauling full bore right through the middle of everyone. I watched one charter do it over and over again... 15 maybe 20 yards off my stern. I took a few pictures of it to share when the time is right, but he wasn't the only one   :bash:

Other than that it was a great day, I wish the moorage wasn't so screwed up I wouldn't even mess with westport halibut

We got 2 on the opener out of PA.  One that was 52 lbs and a 28lb.  Really slowed down since.  Going to fish all 4 days this weekend.  Hopefully things will pick up.  Here's my son with the 52.

Chad, why stop at the corner. Keep going west. We where wayyy out west and only had about 20 boats with us. Hammered quick limits of decent butts and lings. Doubles and triples where the norm. We ran from CQ to, put 130 miles on the boat, great day.

We were fishing with a couple of buddies who wanted to stop there first. About the sixth time this four letter word charter boat pulled that crap I pulled up and headed across the canyon to finish.
