Well, there are only so many states with elk.. Washington had to rank in there somewhere   ;)

Hard to believe that they put Washington ahead of Oregon, Idaho, and Colorado!

Trek, I think you're reading it backwards. Idaho is #1 (WA is #4), or maybe I am..  :o

I think WA go the nod because of the Roosevelt option.  There are high percentages of trophy Roosevelts in SW WA because there aren't Roosies in most of the other states that have elk.  Only CA, OR, WA and AK have Roosies that I'm aware of (other than zoos and parks).

Notice anything in common about the top 4. All have OTC archery elk opportunities, all of the rest are draw only.

Forget going to Montana, didn't realize I had such good elk hunting out of my back door. That must be why WA sells so many NR elk tags.

Makes sense to me because there are only so many good OTC elk states (6 or so) plus az, New Mexico and Nevada for draw.

Its a money generator for the Wdfw trying to get out of state hunters and after one year of hunting in the coastal jungle they won't come back after seeing the trophy raghorns running around  :chuckle:

If you read the last sentence: "Here are our picks for the top DIY elk hotspots across the nation (hotspots are weighted heavily on easily obtained tags)."

This has article has nothing to do with quality or quantity.  Only how easy it is to get a tag.  That is why WA is ranked #4 (not ahead of ID, CO, and OR, but behind them).
