Anyone know off hand what the non resident odds are and is it a point system?  Considering adding this to my other out of state applications.

Non resident odds are long but you do have the same odds as every other non resident. As a resident I had a 1-17 shot at the sheep tag I put in for

no points. You have to front the money and if you put in for moose you can't put in for deer and elk.

But you can buy deer and elk tags over the counter or put in for unlimited controlled hunts such as unit 27 November hunt and archery antelope

I was only referring to the permit drawings. Hope I didn't confuse anyone. Yes you can still by OTC tags.

I just like to clarify. lots of people act like not being able to apply for deer and elk is so terrible but with the OTC opportunities for deer and elk and trophy species draw odds it is no contest in my opinion

I agree 100%. However the people that like to/want to put in for the deer or elk drawings need to know they can't also put in for moose and vice versa.

After hunting in Washington for the last 22 years and without drawing a quality tag for any species going on 16 years, Idaho finally made my dream to hunt moose come true.  I had to check it 4 or 5 times, but its still showing I drew hunt 3004 in area 1-2. The funny thing is, I told my hunting partner to pick the area for me as we agreed to not put in in the same area to increase our chances of one of us drawing.

I'm so pumped and don't even know where to start. Hopefully I can do the tag justice and enjoy my once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt moose. I guess I should start by calling the biologist and ordering some maps to come up with a game plan to go scouting.

There are too many folks that drew moose last year in Idaho that need banned for not sharing their experiences.  Part of this I'm guessing is because of the pressure to shoot a world record bull with an out of state draw tag.  If you drew and didn't share, I'd love to hear your experience.  I put in 2 years ago, didn't last year and am on the fence for this year.....

I'm not a guy who wants to shoot several moose.  I just want one good one.  I held back on releasing an arrow at an elk after several special permits in this state until this year.  Yes, it took time with some regret on passing smaller bulls, but it's what I wanted.  I'd consider a moose hunt in Alaska and with 2K on a Idaho tag, that goes about half way on an Alaska trip.

Or, I could win a bunch of money and just do both every year :)    Stupid work always in the way.

"To apply for a controlled hunt, residents and nonresidents must have a valid Idaho hunting license and complete the application / worksheet, below."

"Applicants for controlled hunts for moose, mountain goat or bighorn sheep may only apply for one species and must submit the entire amount - tag fee and controlled hunt application fee - when applying. See links below for current fees. Only tag fees will be refunded. Hunting license fees and application fees will not be refunded if you do not draw."

FWIW: Washington and Idaho (and essentially all continental US) moose are Shiras; Alaska moose are Yukon. Shiras is the smallest of the four North American sub species, while Yukon is the largest. If you just want one, and you want it to be large go to Alaska. :twocents:

The hunt was great, but my best friend and hunting partner ended up passing away in a freak boating accident in June.  He and I had put in for tags in Idaho together like we did in many other states, so I contemplated eating the tag and just waiting 5 years to draw again.  After talking it over with my wife, my cousin and other buddy, I decided it would be best to honor him because he was a hunting fool and go on the hunt with the others that I typically enjoy spending time with in hunting camp.
I hunted 12 days with my wife and buddy and used up the last of my vacation. My cousin had to leave after 5 days, but we all had a great time together and we met a couple of really nice locals that were more than willing to share information.  We seen +/-15 bulls in the couple of drainages that I hunted, but most were 30" to 36" wide.  One other tag hold shot one of the bulls I was after, which went 43" wide and had double drops.  I chased around another bull that was pushing 50" and seen him 6 times in 6 days, but could never get a shot under 600 yards and he was always moving.  On my last day, I ended up shooting an average meat bull in the same area the big bull was hanging around in at 2 in the afternoon at about 275 yards. I had passed on this same bull a couple of days prior after calling him over a 1/4 mile and within 40 yards of the road. I dropped him in his tracks about 1/2 mile from the road and finished packing him out around with my buddy and my wife around 2 AM listening to the wolves howl from the next ridge over. My bull ended up going 38" wide, but was had a decent body and I ended up with 316 pounds of boned out meat, which was the most important thing to me.
All and all, it was a great hunt and I would highly recommend it to anyone else who has the means to do it. If any other members draw 1-2 in the future, send me a PM and I will share some information with you.
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.
