600s buck hunts
« on: May 16, 2015, 03:23:33 PM »
I was excited to see these 600 series gmu buck hunts available but I was just curious if anybody knew why they were in the buck category and not the quality category? Seems like any of them could be a quality hunt to me...not that I am complaining, I think its great I have another application I can put in for now. I never applied in theis category before because I have only hunted blacktail over here and there were no buck tags I wanted.

Here's my guess.  Because they are Nov 1-18 and modern elk in those areas will be Nov 7-18.  So it's not like there won't be other hunters out there.  Also, most are low harvest units to begin with.  But, that is kind of a trade off because some of the bucks I've seen in there have been really big bodied and had antlers with a lot of mass--not necessarily lots of points or wide, but still some big bucks.

It's because they need to have some hunts in the buck category, so they can sell more applications. That's all there is to it.

Ah, well they sold me. I would be happy to draw one of those hunts. Though hunting with modern elk season in those areas is a drawback.  It looks like you would have the first 7 days alone.

Well, except for all the people setting up camps (hammering, splitting firewood, unloading trailers), driving around to see how much the area changed since the previous year, visiting the other camps.  Woods get busy a few days before the season.
