Idaho Moose in Unit 1-2
« on: May 17, 2015, 07:50:43 PM »
So I was lucky enough to draw an ID moose tag in unit 1-2 and I am starting to do some research before planning my first scouting trip.  I am not a member of Huntin' Fool, but I know they have some sort of database for members to contact other members that have previously drawn the same tags. Is anyone a member of Huntin' Fool and if so, do you know if there is members list available for moose in unit 1-2? Since I have to drive at least 6 hours each way and spend $150 roundtrip on fuel, I am thinking that joining Huntin' Fool might be a good way to start my research and scouting efforts if they have a members list for this hunt.

I am planning on calling the biologist for the unit this week to see what useful information they can provide.  If anyone else has any helpful information to point me in the right direction, I would sure appreciate the help. I'm going to switch everything to ghost points in WA to make sure I can focus all of my hunting efforts on ID moose, so good luck to everyone else in the WA draw.

Congrats. On your idaho moose tag it should be a blast. Best advice would be to just call huntin fool and see if they have a members list. I would bet they do. When I drew a tag for a different unit they did. Congrats again and will be looking for some pictures this fall!

Yes they have a members draw list. Not sure they will give you #'s without being a member yourself but its worth a try. Here's the #.

By the way if you ever want to become a huntinfool member I'll have you pm me some info and I can have them send you info. It would enter me in to a couple drawings too, so win win. Congrats on the tag.

Cool on the draw!
Don't be surprised if the biologist doesn't have much info for you.  I called last year for my moose hunt and they told me they don't actively study moose populations or density in areas. They just look at harvest stats. Unless the bio knows some areas or is personally interested they are more focused on elk and predators
Good luck!

Congrats on your tag!  Here's a pic to get your juices going; this guy stopped for a photo OP not too far from camp on my 2013 Idaho elk hunt.

I have only seen a couple of small to average bulls while scouting, so the bull on your trail cam picture would be a definite shooter in my book. Most of the areas that I have scouted are either currently burning or closed for fire danger. I'm praying for some rain in the next 2 weeks otherwise I'm going to go blind into another area that is open in the unit, so it could be interesting to see what happens.

Would highly recommend joining Hunting Fool.  I agree with the earlier post that they probably won't give you the list unless you are a member.   I have used their lists in the past when I've drawn units I wasn't familiar with and it was a huge help.  Also did the same for members that called me. Well worth the money to get straight info from folks that have hunted where you've drawn.

I joined and talked to a couple of members.  It saved me a lot of time and helped me narrow down a few areas to focus on, so it was well worth the money.

Yeah, I just need to get up high as many others have suggested. I'm just hoping it rains there so I don't miss the rut.
