Special Hunt App Question
« on: May 18, 2015, 12:35:48 PM »
I've got a 6 year old with a Wild ID # as I got a crab catch card for him last year.  Can I start accruing special hunt points for him now even though he hasn't taken/passed hunters education, i.e. no hunting license?  I'm sure someone on here can set me straight on this.  Thanks.

You don't need a license to apply for OIL, just a wild ID.  I believe you need one for deer and elk

Thanks!  Done.  I logged on and it was pretty obvious.  Possible to go sign-up for a moose points only option.  I figured that at my age I probably would never get the draw of a moose but maybe the kid has a chance.  Not sure about the statistics for this kind of thing.

Well, start getting points as soon as you can, I put in for my Quality deer tag,,, 17 years now, at this rate your kid will be 23 IF he gets drawn. Oh well, maybe it will be this year!

The old adage "I'd rather be lucky than good" often applies to the draw here in Washington

O.K.  Another question.  I checked the box and submitted for Youth Moose.  No problem.  But, it does look like there is the option for my 6 year old to also check boxes for the regular "adult" moose options in the application.  Can he also start to build points for the other OIL "adult" moose hunts even though he is a youth?  I'm guess he can since the boxes come up as options to check off.

I think youth moose is in its own category and when they aren't youth anymore, those points go bye bye.   In the meantime I think he can build normal oil points.   Bobb33 might be the best to ask this question too.  He is usually spot on with his knowledge of the system.  I am just guessing

Never say never.  I was drawn for a moose tag about six years ago.  I only had 13 points.

I would put your kid in for adult moose. The youth points go bye bye when he becomes an adult. The other oil tags he can build ghost points in and they do not go away. Moose is the only one. The youth draw success is a little better but not sure its worth loosing 5,6, 8 plus years worth of points.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I'll sign him up today for the regular points.  Might as well start collecting them now.

No, points are per category. Points in a youth category won't ever be moved into another category. The points aren't "lost" but once a person is over 16 years of age, they can no longer apply in youth categories.
