can you hunt cougar with a pistol?
« on: May 20, 2015, 07:50:08 PM »
After I have heard so many people saying how good cougar is to hunt/eat I'm more interested in it. I really want to hunt it with a 50. revolver some day maybe in like 8 years or when I'm older. But I couldn't find it at WDFW.
so can cougar legally be hunted with a 50. revolver?
thanks!

I believe you can use a .22 centerfire but others here will know for sure, rimfire I believe is NOT allowed.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

50 caliber revolver? :yike:   Is that what you're saying?

Pretty much any handgun would be legal except for 22 rimfire.

You best hunt with what you are most accurate/comfortable.  Your chances will be few and far between without hounds and the opportunity will be a flash and gone at close range.  At distance (accurate rifle) you may have a chance.

A .50 sure will mangle a nice rug and tenderize a lot of meat. 10mm, .357 and .44 mag/special will do the job nicely. Or go with a Contender using a smaller rifle round like a .223, .243, 6mm or .270win. It will extend your range a bit with a scope on it.

Please shoot a 50 before deciding to buy it, they hurt :dunno:

I hunt/shoot pistols a lot and have never found a reason to use anything over a 44 magnum, (except when I use my contenders).  This includes packing in Big Bear country in Alaska.  If I were you, I would look at getting a 44 special or a 41 magnum if you want to use a revolver, and a 10mm if you want to use a pistol.

Edit to add, Handle/shoot as many pistols as you can before making your choice.

thanks! I'm actually getting a .40 smith & Wesson M&P compact semiautomatic I heard police use that same kind of caliber so I thought I should start getting comfortable/accurate using it.

I believe the minimum barrel length is 4". Per the manufacturers specs.
