We saw over 40 different bears and our best day was 14 bears in one day.

300 win mag Christensen arms nightforce nxs 185 bergers. But I think I'm going to go to 215 vld's. That bear ended up getting back up and I had to shoot him again.

Nice bear.  I figured you either had to put another one or more in him 'cuz' the surroundings changing alot from the first hit to where he finally died.

Great weather, good huntin' partner doin' his job and a fine bear.

30 grains of bullet weight change that?

Probably wouldn't change a whole lot, but it's a good excuse to try new bullets. 99% of it is perfect shot placement but bears are super tough critters. Here's a picture of a collared wolf that we took yesterday.

I am curious as well on the change in bullets. Where did the 185's hit and what happened with performance?

:yeah:
I also shoot the 185 bergers vld's. Also what speed?   I can see a slight windage advantage with the 215's. Personally I been thinking about switching to the 210 hybrid if I can find any

I load them up with 79 gr H1000 and they shoot 3248 fps. I hit him the first shot just in front of the shoulder. The wind where we were hunting was so bad most of the time, so with that higher BC it should buck the wind way better.

Running the numbers here mostly for my own interest
185vld @3248 in a 10mph wind from. 9 o'clock was 3.9 moa at 800 yards
215vld @3000 with same wind is 3.3 moa

Difference of 4.8"   That could make or break a shot IMO

From what distance when you said,"I had to shoot him again"...?  Did you try follow-up shots from the same place in the video when you figured that he was just wounded or was the final shot taken when you finally found him.  From your initial vantage/shooting point, he obviously had moved quite a distance given the different ground cover and I'm thinkin' that him finally dying at the base of the opposite side of the tree from you wouldn't have alllowed you a shot from your first position, much less the ability to even see him.

I would have to assume when he got back up that you tried to plant him right there as I expect we'd all try to do.  But where you found him lying dead in the video doesn't resemble the foilage or terrain where you initially shot him.

How far did he actually go from start to finish.........?  As you say.....they are tough critters with a zest for life.

Semper Fi..... ;).

With the load used at the 3,248 MV......how fast was that 185 going and what was the energy level at impact....?

After he laid there for about 5 minutes he got back up and I shot him again at 750 yards and he went quite a ways to the bottom rolling through the brush. He left an awesome trail to follow.he probably went about 200 yards down hill from the initial shot.

Did the first shot blow up on impact and not penetrate or did it pencil hole or bad angle?  185 to the shoulder should be a dead bear. Not trying to hijack your thread, just curious on bullet performance.

They never seem to roll to the top, do they........ :chuckle:.

It always amazes me what some of these critters can take, but then again, humans are pretty fragile by most standards.

Good job!

Yep.....you're definitely a numbers guru.... ;).

Less than a second of tof......amazing when you think about it.  Close to 3 football fields in less than a second, the velocity is still over 2,000 fps and it still pushes up against the 'ole magic number of fpe's to kill cleanly.

Thanks jasnt......you're somebody that 'does the work' and I'm sure that it hasn't hurt your odds nor confidence level.........

very curious as to this statement here.how did you get this 3248 fps?how long is the barrel?it takes almost 4 grain per 100 fps according to hornady 9th,that would put this right around 2825 fps.just curious
You must first be honest with yourself,Until then your just lying to everyone.

I am curious as well on the change in bullets. We're did the 185's hit and what happened with performance?
The wind where we were hunting was so bad most of the time, so with that higher BC it should buck the wind way better.

i can't speak go the op but in my 300wm I'm getting 3080fps with a 24" and re22. I believe this rifle topped out at 3150 but was not as accurate at that speed
I have a Christensen arms extreme ii and it has a 26" barrel not including the break. Every time I've thrown it on the chrono it's been close to that 3250 mark. That's with max h1000 powder of 79 gr. it shoots really well, the gun is three years old and has 1600 rounds down the barrel and before the bear hunt I shot a 3.5" 3 shot group at 900 yds.

Nice shooting Spawnstar!  I had to put my bag of cheetos down when I saw that shot.  Well, I guess it's back to the range for me now.
sounds good to me.Question, when figuring length of a barrel you add the brake also?
