Toyo R/T vs Toyo M/T tires
« on: May 27, 2015, 11:27:19 PM »
Alright fellas. I have been doin some research on tires lately. I have a 2013 double cab tacoma that I want to get some new wheels and tires for. I don't have plans to go mudding but I am a fan of just the way the m/t's look. Has anyone had any experience with them in Washington? Especially for snow and rain?  Has anyone gone the newer r/t route? They look good and are supposed to be in between the at and mt. I have toyo at's on my 4runner and they handle like a dream in snow. But I want something more aggressive and i want to know more about the r/t. Your opinions are appreciated.

I wasn't impressed with the Mts. Never did get to try them in the snow though. They didn't grab like I though they would and road hardened pretty fast. Haven't used the rts

Friend had the MT's on a full size ford. Sucked in the snow/ice and terrible on first of the season rains. You dead set on Toyo's?  Much better brands out there..IMO

I'm looking at those tires too.  I've got over 70,000 miles on an F-150 running H/T's.  Great tires.  They are good through the end of summer, but I'll be stepping up a notch or two in tread aggressiveness due to a change in where I'm driving.
Let us know what you think if you get them.

I have the M/T's on a full sized crew cab chevy with a 6" lift.  I love them and don't have to chain up when others do.   I do a lot of driving in the snow so they work great for me.  If I had lighter truck and didn't have the need for so much snow use I think I would look at the R/T's.

Looking forward to hearing what anyone that has tried the R/T's has to say.

What size are you looking to run?  Mud boggers are for mudding... M/Ts are for living in the Northwest.

You mean like compact snow right?  M/Ts aired down are the best tires for deep snow in my experience.

I just switched from MT's to RT's when I bought new ones after 70 on the MT's. Both work well in the snow but the RT's seem superior in the snow and especially the ice in my opinion. WAAAAAAAYYY quieter. The RT's are an upgrade in my experience. Not in the mud but everywhere else. I have 3/4 ton diesel dodge towing sleds and stuff and lots of snow time. Well, not this year..

I'm not dead set on Toyo's but I have had fantastic experiences with them on all my rides.  I am probably looking at 285/70 on 17.

I haven't ran anything Toyo on that small of a rig, maybe they work better on a lighter truck.  I'd look at the Cooper ST MAXX or some Nitto Trail Grapplers.  I can personally say that those Nitto Trail Grapplers have an awesome look and great M/T traction but are nice and quiet

I bought my r/t at les swab in Des Moines, they are much , much quieter and they did real well in the mud a couple weeks ago but haven't tried in the snow yet.  I did test them on ice last season in the mountains, they held me on a back road that was solid ice, and the road contoured to the bad side.  I really like them so far.

Had a set of mt on a duramax.... and my Tacoma came with a set of toyo mt.
Snow, ice, sand, they suck! Even with 5psi.
Plus is they look good, and last a long time.

I just put wheels and tires on my 2015 trd sport double cab.  265/70r17 is as big/wide as you can go without leveling or lift.  I went with the At2s and they look and ride great.

I have run toyo mts for about 150k miles now on 2 different rigs.
first rig ate threw tires at about 40k miles, f350, probably grossed 10k daily, and towed a 10k# trailer 3-6 days a week. good traction for most of the time.

current set is on my f250, they are older, wear like iron. probably 50k on them right now with 35ish% tread left, problem is they are like 5 years old, and getting super hard. I can break the rear end loose on in the rain doing 50mph.

I will probably buy them again, though I have been looking at maybe getting more of an AT tire. trucks to heavy to use in the mud anyways.

Funny how some guys say they suck and others say they are great.

I have had great luck with the M/T's in snow, ice and mud.  Pulled my 10k trailer 100 yards thru the mud last year to get out of Elk camp.  With a slight uphill grade,  Other guys had to chain up to get out.

No experience in sand.

I think a lot has to do with how you drive, and what you expect them to do in each situation.

I wont buy the M/T's again however,  too loud on the highway.

JJ,

Overpriced, crappy in the snow. The Hankook DynaPro AT is what I've been running for the last 4 years. Discount Tore online is the absolute best place to buy tires hands down. Free shipping to your door.

they are expensive. from tirecrawler.com they aren't as bad.
I think im going to switch it up some and run the cooper discovery st maxx. pretty good reviews, should be better on the hiway and still good enough traction to get me around in the woods/desert just fine.

They ride nice - they are a little noisier than the factory tires, but not bad at all.   They are 265/70R17.    I think you gain around 1" in height over factory.

I ran the M/T on my 2010 Tacoma and they did excellent in the deep wet snow and the mud, I very much prefer Goodyear Duramax tires though. Rated as a snow tire they are incredible offroad and the ride on the road is 10x better and quieter than the Toyos.

Well, I am going to les schwab tomorrow and having them put the m/t and the r/t on the wheel I want on my truck to get a true visual.  I am leaning towards r/t's.  I will post a pic with what I decide.

Funny thing about tires is that people buy what they WISH they needed but not what they do.  Most people would do great with some A/T and a set of link chains but most people buy M/T despite the fact they mostly pound pavement.
MOST people dont drive 50/50 on/ off road so they should buy an A/T and chains. unless your a logger or farmer then that may change. If your a logger then your likely a die hard toyo M 55 fan and i can't say i blame you... LOTs of your fellow loggers agree. IMO if a was a generic hunter that liked to offroad a bit id get the  M55... IMO its kind of like the old BFG mud terrain. the best compromise between off road performance and street wear....

What I see with guys saying the MT's are great in the snow is, most likely they used them 2 weeks a year while hunting, but haven't used them for 6 months in the horrible snow and horrible ice conditions. I have and they are horrible. The wider the tire, the worse they are in any driving conditions, right Special T ? I have studded snow tires, Mountain Cats and Hankook Dyna Pro AT's for summer driving.

I have factory Goodyear Wranglers (OEM) on my F-150, and they truly are garbage.  3 failures in 20k miles.  Granted, they are "P" rated, 4-ply tires (have to expect tire splits on sharp rocks, right?).  Thus, I, too, need to look for better tires.  I absolutely hate to get flat tires in the mountains!

I carry real chains.  I was thinking 8-ply A/Ts from Les Schwab.  What do you think?

If I were to buy from les schwab id get toyo m55 s. Otherwise id go to costco and buy some bfg at tires in the size/ply of my choosing. Those 2 tires have the best wear on off road imo.

My 4runners always ran Toyo AT's.  The handling in any terrain was superb.

Ha, I bought a GMC Sierra back in 2000, it had Goodyear 4-plys on it as well.  I split a tire in my gravel driveway, third one, but at least the other two were on rougher gravel/dirt, at less than 5000 miles....  I'll never buy a Goodyear tire based on this experience.  I'm sure there are some good Goodyear models, but based on their business practice of selling these to GMC for a full sized truck, they can take their tires and stick 'em.

The wider the tire, the worse they are in any driving conditions, right Special T ?

Not sure I agree with that statement Campmeat. I personally like pizza cutters for the mileage gains but  a wider tire does have its benefits of more contact area and an ability to lower tire pressure. The down side to my pizza cutters it they wander bad in the ruts on the hwy we have over here...  Im not sure how wide you think is too wide but im guessing more than a 12.5 width? width and traction are determined by your ability to either "float" or sink to the solid ground for traction. Full sized rigs cannot float they are just too heavy. really small rigs like jeeps, Samurai, trackers etc can float and i have seen them do it leaving full sized rigs with lift and pizza cutters plowing snow. For  most driving I think skinny is better unless you out "wheeling". My personal favorite that i have run on several rigs is the 33x9.5x15. They are getting pretty hard to find. I think the next best tire is what my brother runs now a 255/85R16 which is a 33" tire offered in a 10ply but there are not very many companies offering it up. BFG is offering it however and Im kind of partial to them.

Not related to pickup trucks but here in the skagit valley there has been a trend that more log truck drivers are using super singles on the drive tires and some even on the trailers. They seem to be running Michelin X ones capped up in more deep tread or running  425's which is about a 16" wide tire. Ive heard guys running them run a low psi about 80lbs or so allowing the tire to flex around the shot rock instead of having an impact break. They are also no getting rock damage between tires... Down side is you cant limp them anywhere. One cool trick to address that Ive seen is putting a air hose attached to a glad hand so at least you can get off the hill, or closer to town depending on how bad the leak is.

Loki lots of the factory stuff just meet the bare min due to trying to keep costs down. Belive it or not I ran some p rated tires on the front of my dodge 1 ton. Lasted a really long time. Fortunatly I caught them as they started to seperate and changed them out. They were what I had on hand so I went with them. I thi k they lasted 8 months of hard use. I upgraded a while back to 19.5 steel bead to bead commercial tires. They are working and wearing great, but thats what happens when you only utilize half the carry capacity.

Light SUVs and small pickups like a Tacoma can float over snow but these guys with 14.50 wide tires on their one ton crewcabs are just in the business of mall crawling or wasting money on their contracting truck.  They don't wheel and those tires are garbage in the deep snow on those pickups.

:twocents: A 255/85/16 is a good choice for a thin tire and I think they run about $180 for those BFGs M/T.  I'm considering those for my next set of tires on the 4Runner.  Thin tires are easier to fit to more wheels and allow for more articulation for those of us who don't "mall crawl".

So just to give some feedback after putting some mileage on the tires, they have been great!  They are not loud at all!  And those of you with Tacoma's, there was no trimming required for this.  Only removal of the front mud flap, which scrapped when I went over curbs anyways.  So I am glad that they are gone.

Have the same truck as you and JJ, but in long bed. I run the toyo MT on  aftermarket 17s with a  small lift.  Handle great, but little loud on a yota for the freeway. I don't drive it daily so I guess it's still worth it for when I need the extra bite. I drive it often enough in fields/mountain roads where quick tread clean out makes it worth it.
I got them because I loved them on my lifted quad cab Sierra. IMO...the toyo MT is better in full size rigs.
Next time I might move to something aggressive, but a little quieter.

Thanks,  You gotta love them.  I love American made products, but something about those Tacoma's.......
those tacomas are more american made than any ford or chevy these days...
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,

THANK YOU!
I honestly can't believe people buy tires based on looks!
I hear that a lot on the Toyota forums.
Tires have one purpose and 'looks' ain't one of them!

Thousands of mall crawlers disagree with you.   :yike:  people who have 33x14.50 tires on their contractor trucks are buying them for looks and they're spending a pretty penny.

I buy a tire that get's me up steep muddy and snowy roads, the nice thing is they look cool too.

Nitto Mud Grappler and Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac are my favorite tires right now.  If you saw the road to my house in winter...they ain't for looks  :chuckle:

I have run MT's on my expedition for years and love them. IMHO, great in snow. Never had a problem with a ton of trips into snow country for back-country snowshoe overnight trips.  I probably get 55k out of them before I replace. Only thing I hate about them is the price.

Also, the ten ply has kept me from getting flats. I always got tons of flats on other tires, but not with the MTs....
