300wsm speer 180 btsp load
« on: May 24, 2015, 10:23:42 AM »
Anyone using this combo? If so what specs are you loading to? I've done some research already but I'm curious if anyone here is using these, if you don't like them I'd like to hear why as well.

I'm going to load some up in front of RL22 I may try some N550 also as I have it on the shelf. Bullet has a great BC and pretty good price. If they work out I will be using them for hunting, hoping for a good compromise for long range and short range hunting.

Gun is a Tikka t3 24" factory barrel.

I have 2 of that same rifle.....my son hunts too.

I use a healthy amount of RL22 to push a 180gr. Barnes TSX and have taken several bulls with this combo (Norma brass and Fed. 215M primers).  There was no need to try a different powder as RL22 surpassed my expectations.  I use it in my .270 WSM and my 25-06, as well.  When you own WSM's, buying the 5 lb. canisters is both less costly and smart from a uniformity/consistency/accuracy stand point.  I buy a few at a time with the same lot #'s just to ensure my loads remain the same, which I do for primers, bullets and brass too.

It is very accurate and the combination is very lethal when you do your part.

It is a great cartridge...the best of the WSM's....IMO.

Good luck!

I load 180 grn btsp with IMR 4350 in my A-bolt.  If I remember correctly, they push right around 2900 fps at the muzzle.  Very accurate and no problem on game.

Any longer distance shots on animals with them?

Thanks for the replies guys!

The longest on game was just over 100 yards.  I've shot this load out to 900 yards on steel though.

Went out and shot a few of my old accubond loads I had laying around for the last couple years, forgot I even had them  :chuckle:. Anyway, they suck, 62gr of N550 (1 gr hotter than book) was only netting mid 2700 fps with the chrony at 10ft and had some of the necks come out with pin holes in them  :yike: brass was only fired once. No other signs of pressure issues. They didn't group well at all but that could have been mostly me I haven't had much trigger time in the last couple years.  I hope the RL22/btsp fixes the fps issue but I may have to go to expensive brass if the winchester stuff keeps getting pin holes in it.

Sorry to hear that it hasn't come together, so far.

2,700 fps is waaaay under it's potential.  I expect that RL22 will help to fix that.  Mine happens to be a compressed load with the 180 TSX's........with compressed loads being very much my preference and what I strive for with any load as long as all the others factors meet my requirements.

Norma brass............very, very good brass and depending on how many you purchase, could last you a lifetime of normal range/hunting trips.

Good luck!

I prefer a lighter bonded core (Accubond) bullet when it comes to the .300 WSM. Proper bullet construction and speed makes up for mass to a certain point. I push a 150gr Accubond at 3340 with H4350 and a Federal 215 match

I prefer fast and flat out to 500 for lighter hunting rifles.

Nosler 150gr Accubond, recovered from a Mulie shot just shy of 500 with a Rem700 .300 WSM .The bullet was recovered from just under the hide on the off side.

Have you shot anything with those 150 gr bullets at closer rangers ? Like 50 yrds to 150 ?  Looks like they held up beautifully at long distance !  I sure like the 180 gr Hornaday Interlock ..they hold up the same ..but I do need to try some accubonds this year !

The " Accu-Bomb " point blank theory is invalid. I watched my younger brother shoot a Mulie point blank, maybe 30' feet in the chest as it stood up out of its bed. It was faceing him almost head on, it was shot with a 140gr Accubond from a .270 WSM and crushed  it, DRT! The bullet traveled the full length of the deer and I found it looking almost identical to the picture I posted above just under the hide of the rear quarter. I've taken deer, elk and bear with Accubonds in 7mm 140 & 160gr, .375 260gr, .30 Cal 150 & 165gr, .270 140gr and the performance has been the same or I never recovered the bullet(Passed through).

The standard Hornady interlock has performed for us almost the same as the Accubond but is a non-bonded core bullet. The Hornady Interlock is no slouch!!

unless your getting poor accuracy don't bother with the accubonds over interbonds, same performance for a cheaper price.

I use 180 grain Grand Slam boattails in my first 300 wsm, which is a Savage 16 FSS. The rifle shoots lights out. I killed one bull at about 175 yards on the move with one shot, a mule deer at 517 with one shot and 3 other mule deer over 300 yards with one shot. The only animals I shot at closer range I had to shoot 2 or 3 times just to put them down as quickly as possible. I only stopped hunting with the rifle because of the weight and now hunt with my Tikka T3 or Kimber Montana, both chachambered in 300 wsm. IMHO, this is the most versatile caliber for a western hunter.
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm hoping to get this gun set up to shoot reliably out to at least 1k yards. I've been confident at that range and beyond in the past with other rifles, but I'm out of practice for sure now. That is the main reason for sticking with the 180gr and may even try some bigger bullets if time allows. The other reason I was hoping to use the sierra BTSP is cost and availability. I hope to do a fair amount of shooting before the season and sometimes finding the high end bullets can be difficult but it seems the Sierra's are always on the shelf at the local stores.
