Forest Grouse opening this year?
« on: January 06, 2009, 09:45:20 AM »
In trying to put together my "big" annual vacation leave request, I noticed that this year Labour Day is almost the 2nd week of September, the 7th.  I have tended to think of Grouse season as beginning on Labour Day...

For the folks who have hunted Wash. Grouse longer than the past 2 years... do you think Grouse will open on the 1st?  Or the 6th?

Much thanks in advance,

Still a rookie,

It's always opened the 1st. I'm not sure why they would change it.

Cool - thank you!  I didn't know if it was one of those "2nd tuesday of May" sort of annual things.

Always opens first of September.  When I was a kid I used to count the hours to opening day of grouse because it was the first thing that opened.  Now my son starts bugging me in July almost daily... "dad, how long til grouse season opens.."
Here's him with his first bird of 2008.

That is very cool, Pathfinder101!  We're hoping to get to take our nephew Jacob grouse-hunting too.  Though we may have to wait, at least, until he is walking... probably.  Wonder if they have Grouse in Connecticut?

Thank you!!

(How about spring turkey - what's the annual opening for that??)

Spring turkey will be right around the middle of April.  I know this because my other boy will be turning two on April 15th, and I spent opening day two years ago in the delivery room.
My wife grew up in a non-hunting family (not anti-hunting, just non-hunting), so all of this was a bit of a shock to here when we moved out here in 2001.  Particularly the part when her "baby" (the 9 year old in the picture-he was 2 at the time) came running in the house squealing and holding a dead grouse in one hand and a dead quail in the other...  I have a picture of that somewhere too.  I'll post it if I can find it...

As long as I can remember grouse opens Sept. 1 and turkey opens April 15. Does not matter what day of the week it falls they open on those dates. I am certainly not beyond think it could change because the only thing certain with our states game regs is change, and the ability to make sure seasons are never helped by mother nature.

Here's that picture I was talking about of my 2 year old with the grouse and the quail.  Quite a shock for Mom.

The late holiday is the reason I am going to buy a Idaho small game licence. I love shooting those grouse.

LOL - actually I am. Born in Chehalis (that was the big city - my dad was a Forest Ranger and we lived on the edge of Randle) and raised from K-12 in Tacoma.  GO LEOPARDS! then GO MUSTANGS! and finally GO TIGERS!  In fact, the only time I lived outside of Western Washignton was 2 years in Michigan, and that worked out poorly.  Came home with my tail tucked, as it were.

The habit of using the Brit/Canookian U is my dad's fault.  I'd put some sort of explanation here, but frankly there isn't one.  My dad just is.  :P

There are no grouse in Western WA, I live on the Sultan Basin road and take my two dogs grouse hunting almost everyday in Sept.  In the last 3 years I have shot 2 grouse.

The last couple of years I have seen more grouse then in the previous ten. They must be on an upswing.
