Doppler radar chronograph
« on: June 04, 2015, 01:13:50 PM »
Around 500$ from LabRadar. Has anyone seen or used one of these yet? Pretty cool idea...more accurate, can get multiple distance readings on 1 shot out to 100 yards and is not a 'shoot through' piece of equipment. A buddy I know bought 1 for his shooting range in Vancouver.
I meant to take a picture of it at the last gun show, I can at the next show Fathers day weekend. There are some YouTube videos but unable to post any at the moment.

Just returned home from the NRA convention in Louisville, it was quite a ride in the Motor Home.
Exhibitors = 11 acres of nothing but guns and related gear.

One thing I ran across that I found very interesting was a Doppler unit used to measure bullet speed, Labradar.  Not affected by light or light change. Not
affected by wind unless it is enough to blow the thing over.  Measures the bullet speed down range, at your set increments depending on the size of the bullet.  The bigger the bullet the farther it will measure.  Anyway, if it will do most of that the manufacture says it will do, the thing will revolutionize bullet speed measurement for serious shooters.
The guy at their booth was telling me all about it, the longer he talked the higher I figured the price tag would be.  I was surprised when he told me the MSRP was $559.95

The following link will give you much more info than I am willing to type out and a pretty unbiased review.

I believe it measures the sound wave coming off the bullet. I'm guessing it wouldn't work well at a ranger where others are shooting. Pretty cool though!!

According to their literature, "it does not record shooters nearby".

It is on my list of must haves. I figured I'd wait a bit tho as its relatively new and I want to give them a chance to work bugs out before I buy

Not a bad idea, they have already had a couple of software revisions, but they believe that have the bugs worked for the final version.
I think the rep said they were taking orders for June delivery.

Very interesting idea, particularly if one wants to monitor velocities during a ladder test.

That said, what does 100 yds. worth of data actually buy you for real world longer range shooting?  You'll still have to validate your trajectory at much longer distances than this unit is capable of doing.

I use a Magneto right now since it is very easy to use, extremely accurate and stows in a small package.

The magneto has great reviews but I just can't stand strapping something to my barrel. Plus I want to know my speed at the muzzle and 2 other points to get a good idea of actual speeds and bc. The magneto only works for one of those. I always verify long range no mater what equipment says but I think tracking the speed from muzzle and 50 and 100 gives me that much more confidence in my doping. Would love to play with some of the military doplar like Bryan  litz  but that's out of my realm
