Moose Hunting
« on: September 17, 2007, 11:04:58 AM »
I ended up getting lucky and drawing 1 of the raffle tags for moose.  Been out mostly scouting since the 9/1 but started doing some serious hunting late last week.  I've called in 2 so far... I'm estimating 36-38" bulls.  Could have killed both but passed.  I'm really wanting something in that 45" class.

Ran into Miles and Elkaholic this weekend and they suggested I try this forum for info.  Any help would be appreciated.

One other thing.  I haven't had a chance to check out the Huckleberry unit yet.  I've gotten some reports that there are some big, big bulls in there since it doesn't get hunted too hard.  I've done quite abit of turkey hunting over in that area and have seen tons of sign and the occasional moose (nothing too big).  If anyone has any insight on a big bull over in that area I'd be sincerely grateful for the info.

Check out Lane Mt, just west of Waitts Lake. Forest Capital has a bunch of locked up land there that is open to hunting by foot or bicycle. The locals claim there to be state record type bulls there. I have seen alot of moose in that area but I personally haven't seen any monsters. You might give it a shot.

Honestly Selkirk or 49 is your best bet.  Get me your phone #.  I'll be over there in th NE corner or Idaho next week doing some photography.  If I get into a big one, I can get you the coordinates if you are interested.  I'll be in Idhao a bunch, but flirt with the Washington line a bunch.  For the most part, the more North you go the bigger they get. I'm very envious of your tag.My own personal opinion that any moose tag ( huckleberry or selkirk) is a good tag, but I wouldn't waste my time in the Huck if I had YOUR tag in my pocket, unless someone calls you and says they have a monster standing in their yard. :)
