Nooksack elk
« on: June 09, 2015, 07:59:40 AM »
Why in the world are there 5 youth any elk permits and only 3 archery permits this seems pretty stupid. this seems outrageous give um a cow tag. This is slap in the face. The west side quality hunts are a joke. As an archery Hunter there are 5x that amount of any elk tags going to special groups the old the young and the disabled. How is this fair.

Those permits are not true Nooksack permits.  They are an excellent effort by the wdfw to both mitigate damage claims and provide us opportunity.  Although I agree the Westside permits area joke, I still think a thank you is in order in this case not criticism.  Btw this damage hunt doesn't even occur in unit 418 at all.

The south side of the river has some monsters. Where are the hunts for the youth. Also if it is such a problem why isn't 437 open for a general season. It's drives me nuts I can't draw this tag and I see these elk all the time. I think it is something like 50 get hit a yr by cars. Also 5 new any elk tags for 65 and older and 5 new tags for the crips. I'm sorry but this needs to change. 15 any elk tags for special groups and 11 for the quality permits. It's a joke.  Bull tag for nooksack is spike only

IF they want to control the elk.  The need to cull out some cows is a very good method.  I think if the land owners are complaining they need to grant access.

So give the fifteen extra tags to the majority or at least some of the tags to the majority.

To answer your question about "why isn't 437  general? " The long and short answer is  "sportsman", December 26th 2009 I believe.  Sometimes we are our own worst enemies.

I take it you don't have kids and don't have an elderly father/grandfather that hunt?  I think they need to have more quality tags allotted to youth and elderly personally.  Look at the youth and elderly tags, they are damn near ALL antlerless.  We need to get kids involved in hunting and get them excited about it or the future of hunting will be bleak.  As far as the elderly, I'd have given anything to be able to take my grandfather out for one last chance at a decent deer or elk before he passed away.

As a side note.  Just because the tag says Nooksack doesn't mean it is the same as the quality tag.  You might want to look at the description before you get your panties in a wad...

The reality is that someone went to bat for Sportsman.  The valley floor is a cluster to say the least. The last couple years there were major changes and things went from bad to worse.  Now there are people in places trying to interject some common sense and getting critiqued for it.

The other option (status quo) is offer zero permits via the draw to any group.

There doesnt need to be more quality tags for select groups that can put in for general Quality tags as well as their selective (youth, 65+, Master Hunter, Disabled...) permit categories. Those select groups already get preference for 800+ permits with basically no competition.

Sorry to hear about your grandpa. If he was a good Hunter I am sure he took some nice animals.  What's wrong with a general season I am so sick of these special groups. We're the minority we need a handout mentality. Youth shouldn't get a handout they should work hard and one day will hopefully earn a nice animal. Old timers such not get handouts either. Our society is so entitlement based. Also the nooksack tag if I drew it I would be hunting south river exactly where 4941 is so ya I'm not happy. I recently heard of a 380 plus shed found in 437.

I think it's a great opportunity for everybody who applied.  Kudos to wdfw for giving more opportunities.

Honestly what are you talking about I don't understand that logic it's either give these extra elk to minorities or get rid of hunting the Skagit valley all together please explain

Sounds to me like sour grapes
Someday you'll be old and want that over 65 advantage buddy and as far as youth, get them interested early or the sport dies out

I do like to see increase in any opportunity.  I do, however, somewhat agree with you that the larger user group that has horrible odds to begin with should be getting the bulk of new permits.  Youth, senor and disabled can apply for regular bull and quality bull too.  Sounds like they get a separate category with better odds to apply for the same permits--like an extra die toss.

Logistics dictate many of these hunts.  The status quo is to offer a very limited number of permits to landowners and very few permits to master hunters.  These permits are never offered via draw. The general hunt lasted 20 plus years through the herds catastrophic struggles, then was ended in one very magnified  act by sportsman.

Another thing I recommend to both people who oppose or support decisions like this is get involved.  There have been many public meetings where this exact sentiment was discussed. The meetings are open to anybody with time that cares. The reality is more people complain on the net than voice concerns at the meetings.
