I've never taken a hunter safety class, although I did sit in on one with my kids when we were in Nevada in 2006.  My first hunt was when I was 7 years old and we hunted in Friday harbor.

1961 in the basement of Yeagers Sporting goods. Scored 100 on test. Still have the test. Back then they let you take your test home.

Never touched a gun in class. But got to bring my own gun in for show and tell.

I'm old enough that I started deer hunting (and shot my first deer) at age 11 (in 1975) and then New Mex. passed Hunter's Ed law a couple years later and I had to take course before I could go hunting when I was 13yo.

Shot my first deer at age 5 with my grandfather's 32 spec with a side mount scope. Three deer in a line. Aimed at the first one, pulled the trigger and the third one dropped when I skipped it off his back, a quick follow up shot took care of the situation. 4 years later South Carolina started hunters Ed so I took the class then.
