What to shoot a moose with...

Moose aren't that tough. A well placed shot with a good bullet in any big game caliber will work well. I'd probably want to at least use a .25 caliber and preferably larger. There's really no need for anything larger than .30 caliber, but if you want something bigger a moose makes a good excuse to do it.

Heck this year I am using a 375 Ruger for cow elk just because. Of course I am taking the 300 H&H along. But mainly want to use the 375. Last year I used the 375 Ruger on a damage deer control doe hunt. It worked better then the 270wsm for a blood shot meat. Use whatever your proficient with and put the bullet where it counts.

Dad will be using the 6.5 x 55 and I'm seriously considering carrying my grandfather's old 30-30, or the 32 special.

Lots, and I mean lots, of moose have fallen to the 6.5x55 in Scandinavia.

You will never change the minds of a Magnum hunter    You place the bullet it the right spot any Cal. will work .. A lot of us like the .270 and that would be my 1st choice

Shot mine with a 7 mm Mag.  If I could do it again I would have done it with a bow.  They are tough animals so when they are in the rut they could really get cranky.

Shot mine in its bed at 170 yds, through the lungs he stood up and I put one in his hump,,,, he dropped right back down in his bed....Good Night!

Biggest moose killed in our family was by my grandmother.  Single shot from the .250-3000 at 100 yards.  Dropped where he stood.  100 grain Norma Ammo from the 60's or early 70's.  I'd guess that means it was a Sierra, but not sure.

Year later my grandfather took a small meat moose.  Seven shots with the 30-06.  Winchester 180 grain.  Grandma gave him heck about that till the day he died

I vote for any of the above. I've been lucky enough to have taken 3 moose, one with a 50cal muzzleloader, one with a 416 Weatherby and 7mm SAU. All bulls died just fine when hit in the proper spot.

I agree with the above.  I shot the bottom 1/3 of the heart.  It was just mush.  But it went down and than stood up and walked 3 - 4 steps.  Very tough animals.

I shot mine with my 300 Weatherby through the lungs he still ran 100 yards. Still can see the water spray of his back when hit , what a memory. Use enough gun that's what I say. Mine was taken above the arctic circle. Good luck and enjoy. Jaques

I shot a 6-year old Shiras bull behind the shoulders with a 150gr from my .30/06; he swapped ends and I did the same for the opposite side - he fell about 4 steps past the 2nd shot.  Neither one exited, recovered each one under the hide on the opposing side, big beautiful .60 cal mushrooms.

Well the drawing results aren't available quite yet but I'm trying to decide what rifle I should shoot my moose with. Should I make it a challenge and possibly end up with a smaller bull or should I go with something that will drop it instantly at a quarter mile?

My options:

.50 muzzleloader with 250 grain Thor bullet
Pre 64 Win. Model 94 in 30/30
.270 with 140 grain Barnes
30/06 with 180 grain Barnes
338 with 250 grain Nosler Partitions

I'd hunt with a moose permit.....
