I could've got within shooting range of the 6x6, the landscape was perfect for it.  I wanted to see what was on the other side so I kind of left him and went to look for more.  That is how I accidentally ended up standing 40 yards from the 5x5.  The animals were all spread out and bedded so it was kind of tough.  Once I got down to them they were popping up everywhere.

If that 6x6 walks by during the season its getting a .54 or a misfire.   :chuckle:

Good to see still see lots of bull elk  in blast zone somewhere.  They are getting pretty scarce on the Toutle side.  Any sign of hoof rot up there?

Everything seems to be moving around well and in pretty good shape from what I can tell.  Pretty healthy looking animals.  I have a video of two calves nursing off the same cow... From what I can tell its not the only set of twins (or probable twins) in the area.  They're all looking good up there.

It's gaining traction in meratta creek drainage now...by this time next year there will be a whole new public opinion on hoof rot

Glad to see a few cows too.  I'm still planning on being above Ape Canyon around the 8th, so stop by my tent if you're in the area.  I'm so looking forward to carrying a few loads of meat back out of the hole!  😁

I feel like that is begging for punishment.  Why wouldn't you just sit on the lookout before the windy ridge parking area and shoot cows from 50 yards off the road?  Or, do you think they won't be there by then?

Its funny to me how many of the mountain tourists don't see any animals.  They probably think there's few elk in the area.  Nobody seems to notice them, but they're everywhere from the main lookouts.

Oh they'll probably be there, but looking through the harvest stats, shows only about 3 cows shot since the hunts been open.  I just figured if it was as easy as sitting by the road, more would have been taken.  I just thought it might be a little better away from the main road.  I was just hoping to get a in little backcountry hunt with a good chance of getting in on a few elk.  It is going to take away some time from my moose hunting, but a lot of the Okanogan/Kettle Range is closed or on fire right now.  I may have to wait until November for that anyway.  I don't imagine you'll be hanging out around the road either!   :)

Good luck, I hope to see you hauling some meat too!!

Dave
