Drew Blue Mtn. Foothills East

Should be a good hunt for a nice buck. Looking forward to it. I've hunted Blue Creek (Blue Mtn. Foothills West) many times for deer and Lick Creek for elk.

Had it last year and had a great time. Some might say I missed a nice buck.....maybe even twice.
Do you have private access or are you going to try and hunt the public stuff?

You should have a blast. Are you gonna go the first week or second week?

Haven't decided that, yet. May hunt part of both.  Don't have private access, yet; may be working on that.  I'd prefer to hunt public ground and will probably focus on Lick Creek and Mtn. View. If you think that is wrong to do, I'm open to suggestions.  I'm guessing that the whitetails are closer to the wheatfields (that is my experience in other units near there).  With 50 tags, I'm uncertain how the hunters will be distributed.  Any history on that issue would be appreciated. I prefer to hunt where others don't.

The 100 Road and jackelope, what size bucks did you see?  What should I be expecting or holding out for? How did you like the hunt? I don't know, yet, how much time I can dedicate to the hunt, which will dictate what I hold out for.

Hunter75 and toyman2, good luck on the tag. Woodchuck and elkburger, sorry you are waiting so long.  I used 10 points to get the tag.

Holy crap. I had the west too. Wrong year, wrong tag.  I'm a mess in this thread. Carry on without me.

Had the east tag last year. It was rough with out private access. Had to work at the coast all summer with no time to get over there. So I couldn't secure access. We hunted the whole area. We had a blast. Saw monster bulls, big bucks, monster sheep. And killed a few pheasant.
We went 1 for 2. We got lucky on a little bit of public land a had a 4 point chasing a hot doe. I tried to get on some access by permission only and the guy said his neighbors had the tags also so we couldn't access the land.

My advice would be knock on as many doors as you can. Go over early. Next time I'm taking my boat and hunting the breaks on the river.

In Lickcreek you will find whitetails from the wheat fields all the way into the cayons of Mountainview.

There will be some mulies at the edges of the wheatfields, a few in the deeper holes above George Creek, and along the edges of the 43 Road before dropping into Mountainview.

This guy had just crossed the road and quickly headed to the bottom of Mountainview last season.

Thanks for the advice.

Firedogg, its whitetail buck only. I'd rather be hunting mule deers, but that would be a "quality buck" tag, not just a "buck tag."

There's some impressive whitetails in there in the really thick stuff. I've snagged a nice 5x6 and 5x5 out of there and three other 4x4's.  Scout often, sit late into the evening. Keep your scope on a low setting when you are moving because those bucks will hold so tight you almost step on them.

Best advice I can give you is be there  for the entire season if possible.  I have seen numerous good bucks early in that late season just about every year I  have drawn (west unit).  Ironically the best buck I ever passed on was on the first day and I wanted to hunt for at least a week. Just treat every day of that season as an opportunity, as it will be awhile before you draw again.

Doubt I'll be able to swing two full weeks.

Go the 2nd week!!!

Thanks for the advice. I'm thinking about splitting my time between the first couple days and then the last few days.  Makes me drive more and lose time in the back-and-forth, but those are probably the best days for me to hunt.

If you can't swing the two weeks be there from Veteran's Day, the 11th on, if that is a holiday for you.  That way you're only using 6 work days if I'm figuring right.
