Are those considered the Canadian species of moose?

I think they are referred to as the eastern moose.  Not sure on all the differences, but they are larger than the shiras.

Yes, eastern moose (Alces alces americana), B&C calls them Canada moose, and lumps them with western moose for records purposes.  Average mature bulls will dress 900-1000 lbs.  A buddy in NH who has killed two and been on several other hunts recommends: 1) contact county forester and get a list/map of active logging jobs - hunt around the landings (they are attracted to the browse made available by logging, and the skidder operator will often put it in your truck for $50-100; or 2) find a horse logger who is willing to bring a draft horse to pull a bull out (about $300 in NH).
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

That's a lot of headgear. Good luck on that hunt. I have only been to Maine once in '91 but saw lots of moose and the country looks like it would be good hunting.

A moose tag in Maine is a pretty special deal. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

What area in Maine? I have taken 3 in Seboomook region. but that was almost 30 years ago... maine moose is pretty much a done deal if you draw... trick is the heat after kill.... canning is a great way for long term storage too.. never really had to do more than drive and glass logging roads...

WTG, Miles! Be careful with those brain worm-crazy moose back there. They get massive and mean.

WMD 7.  It's the Rangley Lakes, Kennebago, parmachenee area.  It borders Northern NH and Canada.

The moose have been hit hard by the tick problem  along with a lung disease issue.  The populations aren't what they used to be, but we should still be able to find a good one...

The unit is outlined in red.  I'm from Errol (on the map), so it couldn't get any closer without being a NH moose tag.

I used to hunt deer in Colebrook, NH, right across the border. Great area. Best of luck. You should have a great story for us when you return.

Nice!  I used to hunt just north of Errol, stayed in Wentworth Location, would drive out northeast into your moose area and then back into NH on paper company roads that were only accessible form the Maine side.
