California jack rabbit

I shot this jack rabbit a couple years ago down in Northern California with my 17HMR.  Just found this pic and don't think I posted it here.

That is one big s.o.b. All the ones I shot growing up were half of that, or was that because I hunted them with a 30.06  :chuckle:

Put it in the Coyote Madness thread and see if anyone notices it's not a coyote. :chuckle: Might be worth a point. :yike:

I heard that they dont taste good.  I never shot one when I lived in SoCal because Id heard that.  THere a lot of meat on them looks like though.  There was once place tehre was a lot of them in Stoddard Valley OHV area.  I used to hunt birds there and thought a time or two about taking one to see what they taste like.  Probably sage.

I shot a few jackrabbits in Arizona when I lived down there.  There were long, but real lean, not much meat on them, but they sure could run like the wind thru the cactus.  Missed more than you hit with a shotgun.
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

They were fast.  THey would bust a bunch of them in the grass and spook you sometimes.  I have had slings and throw rocks with them and tried aa couple times to whack them but they are too fast.  By the time you wind up and sling the rock it lands where they were.  Once I ran across a pit mine that was about 15 feet deep and about 20 feet wide straight down.  There were a couple deer skeletons, soem other stuff, and what appeared to be a bunch of jackrabbit bones.  I thought about going down to look at them but the sides were so smooth you couldnt get out without a ladder.

Cool pics, thanks for posting. Reminded me of when I was in the navy (1984) & would head out to the Mojave desert. We took dirt bikes , 22's, girlfriend, & lots of beer and camped for the weekend. Lots of Jacks every where, they were pretty savvy though. Hard to get a close shot. Makes me want to go through my old pics to reminisce. mike

I do remember those.  As well as hearing the roaches scurry around in the dorms at night.
