He drew the first time in 2013. We hunted hard several weekends before he shot his moose Thanksgiving weekend. We waited until after elk season before moose hunting. I didn't realize there was a general late season for deer in the same area. I have never seen so many road hunters in my life.

We will approach it differently this time.

Don't tell anyone that you've drawn two moose tags. There are a few people that don't like that. Good luck on the tag

Doesn't bother me, I'll tell everyone I can. There are too many times people draw tags and don't hunt, or at least give it a try. It looks like neither of the Parker Lake muzzy hunters even bothered to hunt last year.

Wow!!! Congrats to your kid and hope his luck continues in the draws.  Not knocking you or him, but seems the system is a little messed up.  Plenty of  other kids out there would love that tag and should have a shot at it before someone gets multiple tries.  Like I said nothing at you, just the system.  Congrats again and post pics.

The system is a draw.  Just like a lottery or lightning strikes.  Some people get lucky.  Some people get lucky twice.  Some people don't.

Yes, it is a draw, but how hard would it be to say only one youth tag for moose in your life.  Youth tags are about opportunity, not somebody that has extreme luck at pulling tags.  Like I said in my post nothing against the tag holder, but the system seems messed up.

Who cares about those people!!! Usually they have bad attitudes because they don't kill an animal every year...(mostly due to lazyness and internet hero stuff...)   Good for the young man! Take advantage of this opportunity!  And for the haters.......let'em hate!! hahahaha

I gotcha there.

Wow I will probably never draw a tag. We need to get rid of these youth tags it's ridicous. What a slap in the face your son draws moose two outta three years good for him but give me a break this is outta control. This is seriously bs.

:-\ feel better now?  Why do we need to get rid of youth tags?

I see your frustration, but this kid pulled of a one in a million chance.  Likely to never happen again to another young hunter or adult for that matter.

Just like guys who pull a quality bull tag with say 15 points then draw the same tag the next year with one.

He got really really lucky.   Imagine just for a second that you were in this young mans shoes. Would you feel the same way?

Last yr 15 anterless tags to vast majority and about 5600 applicant 18 youth tags for 1600 applicants and I bet a good percentage of those youth applicants are ghost points cause kids still in diapers. Also lets not forget those same 1600 kids are included in the regular draw as well.

More anterless moose tags go to minority groups than to the vast majority. It's wrong plain and simple.
youth are the future of this lifestyle. Heck id be just fine with all antlerless moose tags being for youth...  :twocents: i like to see kids get excited about hunting and being successful!. Id rather help a kid with a cow moose tag than have the tag myself.

good for your boy. thats awesome! I dont think there are too many youth tags I know my son has struck out for the last 4 years but he still has 4 to go! He struck out again on Idaho this year too but I did draw Idaho in 2013 after 20 years of trying! And Idaho actually has really good odds on moose. Its a lottery and you just have to play the game if you take away a youths tag doesnt mean you would ever draw anyway. Washington odds suck and sometimes I wonder why I put my son in but your boy proves its worth it!good for you and your son! love moose meat. I wonder how much the odds would even change if you took away all the youth tags? Increase from .001 to .01? I dont even know what the odds are for regular moose tags but they look so low I dont think it would move the needle very much.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. Part of the reason I posted up this thread was to get some discussion on the subject. Even for adults if you draw a antlerless only moose tag you can put in for it again.

Wow!!! Rackattack,

I agree that even youths should only draw a youth tag O-I-L. But, I'm not about to let an opportunity pass for my kids. I doubt my youngest son will ever draw a youth moose tag, but that doesn't mean I'm going to keep my oldest boy from doing whatever he can to be successfull.

His 2013 moose hunt was very special for us. We decided to take his uncle Chris with us on the hunt because Chris had been on several moose hunts in Idaho, and also had tagged a moose in Canada for his high school graduation gift. We spent four weekends hunting with Chris, and didn't realize how blessed we were at the time. Just 5 months later Chris was killed by a drunk driver. Our family is still very devastated by our loss and Gavin and I very fortunate to have spent that time with Chris.

Congrats to your son....hope to have a follow up success story with pictures.

If I had it my way every youth hunter would draw a quality tag before they become an adult (deer, elk, moose, goat, ect.).  Nothing like getting the kiddos excited about a lifetime of hunting.  They are the next generation of our sport and the only way our sport continues for our grandkids and great grandkids.

That would be nice jrebel, I'd like to see the youth cut off age be 18 as well.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

I agree with you MHWASH about youth moose being OIL, just as any moose category being OIL. Draw once, and let the next guy/gal have their chance. However, more power to your son drawing twice since the system allows.

Congrats to you and your son!!!

Nothing better than to have that time with him.  I miss mine now that they are grown, but hope at least one of them will be able to join me on my Mica Peak antlerless hunt this year!

Happy for you both!

How incredibly sad that is.  I am glad that you and your son got that time with him.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Im sure chris will be right there with you and gavin guiding you to a moose again this year!
Good luck and as said before im more than happy to help, even if it is just as a pack mule.
I have been on three successful bull moose hunts but not a cow hunt yet.

Awesome job.  My boy drew in 2010 and just has next year to copy your boy.  Hopefully with 6 points he can get it done.  Such a fun hunt.
