I don’t have a 45/70 so I won’t comment on that caliber but I do have a Marlin 336.  The sights are primitive but effective out to about 200 yards.  The gun handles very well and is easy to shoot.  The only dislike that I have is it is a pain to load and unload.

I have an 1895 45-70 i shoot 300 grain hollow points now with imr 4198. but i want to try the leverevo bullets and tbarnes came out with a 350 grain flat tsx that sounds good. barnes has a 250 grain tsx fn that shows at 2600 fps out of the 1895 so those might be good.
as far as sights go i like scopes so i have a 6X x 44 on mine. works good for me even in thick timber. if you dont like scopes try a peep sight and if you can get a fiber optic front sight.
