It would be nice if you could put a couple of elk out of their misery. Will you be buying the Weyerhaeuser access permit? Only around 3,500 left.

Me and my boy had that tag last year.  Without the access permit, we wemt hungry.  Good luck.

It ain't what it used to be.  I've worked the unit for 24 years and could cruise around and find several herds any given day.  The wife and daughter had cow tags last year and we hunted 6 of the 9 days and never saw a cow in the unit and that included hiking miles behind closed gates where we had killed dozens of cows in the past.

Hopefully you get lucky!

My nephew has the toutle cow tag this year.  I hoping we can get him a shot at one.

I was absolutely shocked at the lack of cows we were able to find last year. Hunted it several other years and they were all 1-day hunts.

Just sayin'...Hope you have better luck

Had that tag last year and got a cow just up the FS 8100, lots of state land but its a little steep and pretty thick. The elk are usually plentiful. Was definitely easier before weyco got greedy

Thanks  for  all  the  info  guys .  I live  about  20 minutes  from  the  south  end  of  the  unit . I also  work  for the  DNR   and  have  spent  plenty  of  time  up there  planting  trees  and  clearing  roads. I agree  that  the  unit  is  not  what  it  used  to  be . Had a Bull tag  in 98 and  killed  a decent  5  pt.  I'll  spend  a  little  time  scouting  but  most  likely  I'll be fighting  fire  all summer .
All information  is  greatly  appreciated .  You  can  never  have  to  much .

I have been up there and it will be a little challenging.  I am thinking I will have my brother drive from point A to B and I hike/hunt with junior until he gets tired.  :chuckle:

It's been  a  rough  fire season  for me had 4 days off in July .  Got  2 days  off in August . September  isn't  looking  great  either  working  this  weekend .  I've  pretty  much  given  up archery   hunting . I was  hoping  to  get  out and  help my brother in law and  nephew . The only  reason  I put  in for this tag  is  my son  is  going  into  the  navy. We were  just  burning  points . I had  14 he had 6

Depressing to hear that the unit's not very good anymore, it's a place I've been excited to put in for for archery cow tags... Did you see many elk?
