It may be good for the deer but it sure makes for some miserable coyote hunting, every Tom, Dick and Harry is driving the roads trying to kill coyotes.  I spend 3 days there at the end of Jan and hunted hard, saw very few tracks, never heard a howl or saw a daug.  We hunted from Dugway north up the west side of the salt lake.  At least I didn't have to buy a license, that would have been really discouraging.  Nevada and Arizona were a lot more fun.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Sounds like the program is working well, then.  It's a bit like squawfish or pikeminnow. I look forward to the day no more rewards are being paid out.

I prefer coyotes, they are a lot more interesting to hunt than deer, plus if you have a good hunt you can pay for the trip with the pelts.  Deer are boring, one shot and the season is over.  They aren't the challenge that getting a coyote  into shoelace range is and you can do it over and over all season long.  Personally I wouldn't mind a coyote season ON PUBLIC LAND from Sept to  April, kill them then and they won't be raising pups in the spring and they are worth something instead of leaving them rot on the ground.  But then I'm an old fart that can remember when the fur check was a major part of a years income and deer were food not sport.

Sounds like someone who would get a lot out of hunting deer with a bow.  :dunno:

Did that from 1956 to 1972 so we could get an extra deer, and flintlock and round ball after that.

I took up archery because I'd killed plenty of deer and there was little challenge with a rifle. I have a lot more fun hunting archery for both deer and elk. Not near the success rate but excellent hunts and lots of close-up experiences. Luckily, my family doesn't starve if I don't get meat. If it were a necessity, I'd still be hunting with a gun.

:) I am with AWS I'll drop a deer or elk hunt in a minute to call coyotes. I did really good on Coyotes over in the NW corner of Utah. Did the Bow hunt thing, muzzle loader thing. I like upland bird hunting better than big game also.

:yike: gosh I think calling in elk is more exciting than calling in coyotes!  I enjoy both but seeing a nice whitetail buck work his way to my stand or watching a bull elk come in on a rope to a cow call is way more exciting to me.  Glad your favorite hunts are so accessible.

To put things into perspective, that is ok, but really not all that much money.  In about 1982 when I was a teenager hunting coyotes and red fox in North Dakota, we were getting up to $130.00 back then for a rifle shot coyote in the round which works out to be approximately $325.00 today, if you utilized the inflation calculator.  For fox, we were getting $80.00 to $90.00 apiece for them in the round.  I made more money doing this than my classmates did working at fast food joints after school...

But that was when the fur market was booming.

:) killed lots of elk, lots of deer, ( moose, bear etc)the hunt does not compare to coyotes or cougars. Being able to set up 5-10 times a day, no limits, hard targets, smart animals, Nope, I'll take coyotes everytime. I am glad you like the others.
