Remington 700ML 50 Cal

Hey guys,

So fairly new to this front-stuffer thing.  Ok, brand new in fact.  I pulled a Turnbull Cow elk tag for end of November.  I knew going into the draw that if I ever got lucky and pulled a permit I'd have to address the other issue at hand - getting a ML!

Ok, so I pulled the trigger so to speak on used, well taken care of Rem 700 ML.  Not the "Ultimate" model but I believe its one of the first in-lines with synthetic stock.  I broke it down from head to toe last night and whomever owned it before me took what appears to be excellent care of it.

Questions - for anyone who may have or currently owns one, how does it shoot?  What load?  Being Turnbull I need to focus on copper, thinking Barnes 290 pushed by 100 gr 777.  Any thoughts or other suggestions?

How about a change of sights?  I shot my buddy's Knight not too long ago that had a rear peep and front fiber, he doesn't recall the name of manufacturer so I'm open for suggestions.  The stock sights are hard to pick up, I really need to change them out.

Might as well warn you - shooting a ML is a infectious disease - once it gets you are got!

The Rem 700 is a great ML... especially for the PacNorWest.  It is a very accurate gun if it sits in the stock correctly.  And it will shoot most any combination.

Barnes are very good bullets - but I would suggest the Bloodlines made for Knight by Lehigh.  The 458x300 grain bullet is a real elk stopper...

I bought a new 700 muzz in 2004,its been a great gun.I put truglo fiber optic sights on it and theyre much better than factory,been wanting to try a peep but havent yet.Used it for deer and elk from 2004 to 2008 with 348 powerbelts and 100grains of pyrodex pellets and #11 caps with good results and accuracy,actually killed the bull in my avatar pic with that setup.Havent used it since 08 but now its goin back into service this year so I got a musket nipple,switched to 777 loose powder,and been tying different saboted bullets.The best one so far is the 300gr Hornady SST with crush rib sabots with 120 gr of 777.1850fps on the cronograph and a 3 inch group at 100 yds.but im still testing.Tried the Federal Premium 270gr but got poor accuracy,

Excellent info guys, thanks a ton.  Keeping notes, great to hear from the guys that have first hand experience with this stuff.  I'm a die hard bow hunter and never thought I'd get into ML, so far it's been a fun experience just learning about the ins & outs...

There are a few fellas here that shoot  the Remington  in lines     been getting lots of pointers from Sabot loader.  for the most part i normally shoot 100 gr 3 f powder , # 11 cci mag   cap  and some of the sabots   that were  sent by sabot loader   that work well in my 54 cal I might add . He can sure help tune you up shooting the in lines.   so pick his brain as much as you can,  feel free to ask around as well lots of help on here  best to just go out and work it up so it shoots well for you  that's the main thing  and have fun

listen to sabotloader, he knows his stuff when it comes to in line muzzleloaders.

The 290 Barnes TMZ are pretty snug in my Rem 50.  My buddy used mine last year.  The 300SST were working great at 100 yards...I know some don't think much of their terminal performance.

The Barnes TEZ could be a good bet....uses a different sabot.

Make sure to disassemble and clean lube the bolt on the 700.  Corrosion builds up in there, slows the hammer, caused misfires.

I have a peep and front fiber on mine.

Where you located?  Maybe able to show you stuff.

Just a thought......the ramrod is a different diameter than all other ramrods made.  It is smaller and the others will not fit in your gun.  If you find a used ramrod for it pick it up as a spare.......especially if you plan on keeping it.  I had a heck of a time finding one a clue years ago.  Also.....being new to muzzleloading.....make sure you keep the thing clean.  If you shoot it and let it sit you will ruin it.  Good luck and make sure to post pics of your cow this year.
