wolf hide prep

im taking my first out of state trip to idaho in november and im going to buy a wolf tag or 2 and im really hoping to tag a wolf....if by chance i do get one what do i need to do to the hide till i get it to the taxi?....i live close to my taxi at home so ive never had to prep the hide before...what do you guys do that hunt out of state to save your animals?

That and bring rubber gloves and a face mask! you dont want to pick up those nasty parasites they carry!

That's the thing I've always skinned it and took it to the taxi within a few hours....this is going to be a few days.....I'll bring an extra cooler for just the hides  :tup:

Tom, you may want to visit your Taxidermist, & have a conversation with them before your trip...what they prefer for field care/prep. Not sure what others do, but if you skin the animal yourself, avoid putting hide  in a plastic bag of any kind. Instead, use a burlap bag,old pillow case or laundry bag. Plastic bags tend to allow bacteria to thrive unless in a deep freeze. Also, the ears & face tend to slip ( bears,fox, coyotes, cats) if not handled ASAP, I have had good luck squirting some isopropel rubbing alcohol on any areas I suspect bacteria to be a problem. Keep as cold as you possibly can. If you plan on doing any caping or field skinning in the future you may want to get a scalpel with replaceable blades ( I like #22 blades).  here is a link from one of the suppliers I use you may find helpful

Thanks  :tup: I gotta pick up my bear hide soon so I'll talk to him and see what he says...I didn't even think about asking him...I always come here first  :chuckle:
