Skokomish Bull tag
« on: June 21, 2015, 11:24:33 AM »
Drew the skokomish archery bull tag this year.  Didn't have any other options to put in for because of vacation time.  Never hunted the unit before, so any advise would be greatly appreciated.  Access roads, timber lands etc.  First post on wa hunting forum, so sorry in advance if I make any mistakes.

I've heard.  Didn't expect to draw with 4 points.  I'll make the best of it though and do a lot of scouting.

Yep, tough tag to fill.  You will have a ton of competition with the Skok and Squaxin tribes.  They start hunting those bulls in August.  Good luck to you!

It is a tough to fill. Just try and make some scouting trips and see if you can find a spot holding elk.

Get up past Wynoochee lake, head up towards Discovery Lake and hike up towards it, stay below the park boundary and you will find elk. There are some pretty good bulls above Discovery. If you can call ( I am not very good ....yet) you can bring them out of the Park and the Litchy creek drainage. Or just head out to Matlock and go bang on a farmers door on the north side of the Deckerville road and whack one in his hayfield. The tribe cannot hunt those private fields.

I second the recommendation around Wynoochee Lake.  When I was working for the ONF I had to do some work on an old decommissioned road that took you to an upper basin that held elk.  pm if your interested in its location.

Discovery does have some big bulls. All last year bear hunting I never seen a single elk up there like I had in previous year.
But I'll be hunting that area alot in September due to the tree farms closed for fire danger...if you want someone to show you around I'll gladly be a pack mule.
I also live on the north side of deckerville rd...and I know where the elk go out behind my house with private property to hunt when every thing is locked up

That's great!  It's looking like I may need a body or 2.  Gotta get one down first.

Agree with the location above the lake. When u find them it's usually in good numbers. Only problem hard to get that o e bull in the group. Hunted it off and own for ten yrs around the lake. get off the rds u can dr. Other wise t g e Indians won't be far behind.

Very true. Last summer didn't see any tribesmen up there. 2 seasons ago though I seen the tribesmen up there almost every day. Funny enough how that works it was the year I seen elk often too.
It's almost like they are informed by satellite  :chuckle:
