Youth hunt 181 cow Aug 22
« on: June 25, 2015, 03:30:05 PM »
Ok folks,

I have a tandem team of 9 year old girls (my daughter and her best friend) that drew their first Cow Elk Tags for 181 Couse for August 22nd.  I know the Grande Rhonde pretty good for turkey, but not a clue as to where to start scouting in 181.

We are prepared to get out there and do the work and start talking to property owners - if someone could point us in the right direction it would be great.

Thanks from Puyallup - 253.324.8362

Don't know the area at all, but hope the two girls get to tag cows.  Good luck and let us know how they did.

I know the area well. Unfortunately, it's extremely private. The Elk move around a lot. You need to try and secure as many places as you can. The heat will be a major factor as well. You need to come up with a plan to cool it fast. The butcher in Clarkston is a nice guy. I have his # if you want it. My son had your tag a few years ago. He met us at his shop at 3:00 AM to beat the heat for the long drive. I think it's kind of a damage hunt. Hopefully the game department gave you a list of Land Owners who might let you hunt. There is a lot of CRP land as well. Feel free to PM me as well. I have not hunted Elk in a few years, but I sill hunt the late hunt for muzzle deer. It's a fun hunt, especially for kids.

Stupid question here, but I cannot find anything on the WDFW website.  Can you hunt big game at 9???!!  I am an Idaho transplant, and was told when I moved it was just like Idaho, and you had to be 12????  I have a 9 year old and that would be awesome!  Can someone enlighten me?  I cannot find any mention of a  minimum age?  Thanks!

Kids just need to pass hunters education and they can hunt.
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Ok welch pm me.  I know the area well and honestly grew up over there.  May be able to pull some strings for kids. Bugle brush in WA kids just have to be competent enough to take the test and handle firearms safely.  Put them through hunters education.  We all love to see kids hunting and there is no minimum age.  I took hunters ed at 8!

Buglebrush not going to lie you need to be looking at hunter ed.   This late in the year it is hard to get in depending on where you live.

Info for property owner that is off the Cloverland Rd where it drops from the fields into George Creek and to the NF boundary.

Good luck, hope this gets the kids out there.
