Favorite bullet for deer and elk. Just getting into hand loading and looking for a good bullet.

I have only used one bullet in my .270. A 150 gr speer boattail. Killed a lot of deer with it and an elk or 2.

H4831 and any 130 grain bullet. Lots of good choices out there.
Anything will kill deer and elk. Just find the one your rifle likes.

You cannot beat the Nosler Accubond. Accurate, deadly, and reliable. I have killed animals in .270, 30-06. and 300 wsm. Antelope to eland. Now there is the long range version which I do not have experience with. How much difference is there between the Accubond and the Accubound LR. Anybody know?

I Haven't needed to try any other combo than the 130 Accubond and H4831. But, I am not using it on elk, only deer sized game.

Thanks guys. Sounds like partitions are a favorite. Best go get a box and dive in. Pretty excited to try out different bullets. TTSX have me intrigued a bit as well. Y'all have a good weekend. I'll try to keep you posted on what I come up with.

I have to wholeheartedly agree here. Accurate and deadly are the two best adjectives to describe the 150 gr Partition.

Imr 4831 or vihtavuori n560 with a 130 berger, zips em out there fast and accurate. Might just be me but I won't shoot Barnes

IMR-4831 and a 150 PT for elk. For deer any 130 gr. bullet will work just fine.

Had four different .270's and they all liked 150 gr, didn't seem to matter what brand of bullet, IMR-4350.
Used on a lot of Antelope and Deer, never tried on Elk

I would like to hear your opinion on the Barnes bullets. Pretty hard to find negative reviews. I would just like to gain the info. Accubonds seem to get reviews all over the board. I shoot 160 grain accubonds out of my 7 ultra. They are accurate, but haven't got a lot of experience on kills with them except a small whitetail buck. Partitions seem to get nothing but rave reviews.

Barnes bullets are great, you just need to push them as fast as possible, the faster the better. They will not come apart like other bullets do. Weight retention will be at least 90%. Best thing to do is go lighter than you normally would, so with that 7 Ultra you might go with a 140 or 150 grain.

I've been shooting 150 gr. Nosler Partitions (53 gr. IMR 4350) for 25+ years in my M70 Featherweight. This is the most accurate load I've ever come up with, and the bullets have always performed extremely well on deer.

I've experimented with 6 or 7 different bullets over the years......and most are way more expensive than the Partitions, with no improvement in accuracy. I was not impressed with the Barnes bullets because I always experienced very heavy copper fouling.

In my opinion I would stay away from Berger bullets, but again, that's just my 2¢.

I like the 150gr partitions, only thing I've killed with them is a pronghorn though. Killed several deer with the 140 gr accubond and it performed nicely. I do like think the partition shoots better out of my rifle though. I don't like Barnes bullets because I worry about not getting proper expansion on long range shots where velocity has dropped off.

This was my deer and Antelope caliber for quite a few years and if the 130's worked for Jack Occoner I am not going to argue......

The Barnes shot very accurate for me but I have had a couple instances where they seemed to zip right through an animal and didnt seem to expand much if at all.........That said they did kill very good and animals did not travel far. I haved switched to Accubonds for the .270, 3006, and .338 and couldnt be happier on close and far range shots.

Accubond, Barnes TSX/TTSX, Nosler Partition, Barnes, Hornady, Trophy Bonded Tip are all going to do the job on any caliber appropriate animal anywhere in the world. Other premium brands should work well too. If you are going to shoot usual distances on animals and killing is more important than anything else the common Remington Core-Lokt or Federal Power-Shok work just fine. Start with the cheaper stuff, figure out what shoots best in your gun, and go fancier when you find a need to. Don't buy into the advertising until the cheaper stuff fails you. Spend your time shooting and your money on ammo and you will be far better off than listening to any advertising.

Corey picked me up a few boxes of the 190's in 30 cal that I have been playing with in my 300wsm. They are very accurate! I've pushed them out to 900yds so far. BC is way inflated though. Big difference between the lr and the standard accubonds is the lr's only take 1300fps min to expand compared to the 1800fps the normal accubonds require. I'll kill three, maybe four mule deer with them this year and will be able to speak to their performance on live game after the season.

as far as the .270 goes, I like 140gr bullets. Great combination of weight and velocity. Currently I load the 140gr Hornady interlocks pushed by imr4350 for my wife's .270. That combo has killed plenty of deer. Like shootem said, don't buy into this crap about how you can't kill anything unless your shooting this or that. Your talking deer and elk here, not elephant. I've killed em with about every projectile you can think of and they all died. As long as your not shooting past 400-500 yards, darn near anything will work. To this day, probably the most reliable, accurate, and deadly bullets out there is also one of the oldest, the Nosler partition. That bullet in 130-150 will be wicked medicine on literally anything in the lower 48 states.

Started loading for my .270 last year. I decided to go with 140gr ABs and got it shooting 5 shots under an inch with 57gr of imr 7828ssc out of my Sako A7. Got great penetration on my buck last year, quartering away.

I have killed a lot of deer, and one cow elk with the .270 win. My favorite bullet is the 140 Accubond. Like BLRman said, most bullet's work well. I use RL19 powder, and a recipe from the Nosler reloading manual. Look at IMR 4891 powder for the 270win as well.

270 is very versitile...

Powders: 4350, 4831, H1000, Retumbo

Bullets: 135 SMK, 130 BT, 130 AB, 150 NABLR, 165 Matrix

Havnt had a chance to get started on a load yet for my rifle but I picked up a box of 130 gr ttsx and they are awesome. Shots consistently touching each other at 100 yds. Can't wait to start handloading for this gun. Not til after hunting season though. Good luck to all this season!

Partitions shot pretty good out of my rifle too but definatly not as well as Barnes. Haven't been able to find accubonds. But the portions will be on top of my list when I can start hand loading for it. Way too many people in favor to not try them.
