Cle Elum advice GMU 335 Teanaway
« on: July 01, 2015, 08:03:27 PM »
I'm visiting daughter in WA. And plan to hunt East of lake Cle Elum.

Wife will camp in Cle Elum in our 5th wheel, drop me in the moutains where I plan to pack in and camp/hunt for a week during general rifle and look for a spike.

I'm a recently retired SEAL, in good shape and all the right gear.

Questions:
Is this a decent area.
What should I expect for the weather?
Any advice in a PM would appreciated (IE, usual snow elevation, elk in relation to snow level, spot and stalk, sit and wait for others to move the elk, is it a crowded area, spikes alone or with a group, etc)

Brad

look at google earth and put your self as far away from any road as you can . the further east you go the more open the landscape becomes . during modern be ready for a complete zoo.

Been spending lots of time with Topo Maps online, this is a great site: http://www.wilderness.net/map

With it being a zoo, in Modern, my thoughts are set up a site as far away from roads as possible.  Then glass, glass, glass: hoping to pick up elk being pushed by crowds?  Goal: a week of patience gets me eyeballs on a spike I can stalk...

Is that a worthwhile strategy

Anyone know what general snow level would be during first week in Nov?  Or, do the elk stay below the snowl level, at the edge of it, or will they stay up in 1-2 feet for a few days?

Elk won't push out until there bellies are dragging in snow. The chance of snow is probably pretty low with the dry weather forecast this year.  But it will be cold at night. So your plan is to observe and stalk or observe and shoot?

Plan on hiking in 3-4miles to 5-5, 500 feet.  Setting up tent, then glassing AM's.  Shifthing to a new ridge and repeat for PM.  Hoping elk will be moving with other hunters pushing them.

Somewhere up a pack trail above Indian Campground, near Yellow Hill and
Elbow Peak (5, 700 ft).

Sounds like a good plan, elk are in Yellow Hill.

It's a true spike area. Not worth the time imo. I see maybe one a year between all the cams I run. Not trying to ruin it for you or kill your buzz, but there aren't high spike numbers in there. And the chances of true spike make it that much more difficult. Good luck. Shoot a pm if you'd like. Those elk move around quite a bit in there too. Can be on one ridge one day and ten miles the next.

Thanks all.  This will be more of a learning hunt.  Heck, I'd be happy just seeing some nice bulls and learning their behavior.  If a spike walks in the cross hairs that would be gravy on my time in the moutains.

One day, maybe I will get enought points to put my learning to use on one of those big bulls you all keep posting pictures of!

I work at Suncadia resort which is a couple miles away from cle elum. A lot of the mornings I see ton of elk and deer driving to and through Suncadia and these beast are not afraid of the cars. They seem to be use to all the traffic. I'm sure you will see some action if you out the time in.
Why cant hunting season be everyday
